Lady Tigers head back to Tennessee for Mid-South/Southern States Challenge in Pulaski

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University women's basketball team will hit the road for another two-day challenge in the Mid-South Conference/Southern States Challenge this Friday and Saturday.

CU will face off against No. 16 Bethel University on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET in Pulaski, Tenn. to open up the challenge as they will finish off their two-game stretch facing the hosts Martin Methodist College at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The voice of Lady Tiger basketball, Matt Payton will be on the call for both games on the CU Sports Network online with Saturday's game airing on the radio on 88.7 The Tiger if Campbellsville earns a win on Friday over Bethel.

After their pair of comfortable wins last week behind big third quarters, the Lady Tigers will face stiff competition in a pair of future MSC foes as Bethel will be the first ranked team CU plays this season and Martin Methodist sporting an early 2-1 record.

The Lady Tigers picked up a pair of wins last weekend against Dillard University and Brescia University in the Chamber Classic to open up their 2019-20 season 2-0.

SERIES FACTS VS. BETHEL
  • Bethel and Campbellsville have met 11 times over the last 13 seasons, all during Ginger High Colvin's tenure as head coach.
  • The most recent meeting came two seasons ago as CU earned a road win against the Wildcats on Nov. 11, 2017 by a final of 72-61.
  • That 2017 win came behind 21 points from former Lady Tiger and current LTB assistant Madison Clements and 14 points from Savannah Gregory off the bench during her redshirt freshman season.
  • Likely the most important meeting between these two programs came in the NAIA National Tournament of 2015 when the Lady Tigers won 73-64 to earn a trip to the Fab Four.
  • The first meeting between Bethel and Campbellsville came in High Colvin's head coaching debut where the Lady Tigers helped her win her first of now 337 wins with a 94-73 win.

SERIES FACTS VS. MARTIN METHODIST
  • Martin Methodist and Campbellsville have met seven times in their history with the Lady Tigers taking home wins in every matchup.
  • Both of these teams have faced off in the last three seasons with the closest margin of victory for CU coming last season with their 91-75 win.
  • In that game, Savannah Gregory led the way for the Lady Tigers with 18 points with 13 of the 14 Campbellsville players that got minutes recording at least two points.
  • CU owns a pair of one-possession wins against the Redhawks during the Donna Wise era with a three-point win in the 2006-07 season and a one-point win in the 2005-06 season, both games were in Pulaski.

CHASING 1000 WINS
  • Entering the 45th season in Lady Tiger basketball history, they are inching closer and close to a monumental milestone in NAIA women's basketball.
  • By current count, Campbellsville women's basketball has recorded 998 total wins in program history, just two wins away from being the third program in NAIA women's basketball to reach the 1,000-win mark.
  • Wayland Baptist' sits at the top spot with a program total of 1651 wins and Union University (Tenn.) had 1141 NAIA wins before converting to NCAA Division II.
  • Each program in the top-10 of total program wins started their program in the 1970s with the exception of Wayland Baptist, whose first season came back in 1948-49.

LAKE MAKING IT RAIN
  • Sophomore guard Lexy Lake got the vote of confidence from the Campbellsville coaching staff to begin the season in the starting lineup and she made it count, scoring in double figures each game.
  • Lake scored a career-high 21 points in CU's 90-77 win over Brescia last Saturday on 7-for-9 shooting from three-point distance to lead the Lady Tigers in scoring.
  • She began her season with a 14-point output against Dillard on 4-for-12 shooting from three while adding two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR GREGORY
  • Redshirt junior Savannah Gregory started her season off on an extreme high note last Friday with a career-high 25 points and the third double-double of her career with 11 rebounds against Dillard.
  • The very next day against Brescia, Gregory put up 13 points, five steals, four assists, and three rebounds to help power CU to a 90-77 win over the Wildcats.
  • Those two games helped Gregory earn her sixth-career Mid-South Conference Player of the Week honor after averaging 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals in the pair of contests.
  • Five of her six MSC weekly honors came last season as she also earned four of the last five of the 2018-19 regular season, making it five of her last six weeks eligible being the conference player of the week.

SCOUTING BETHEL
  • The Wildcats won their season-opening games against Brescia and Dillard at the Chamber Classic, much like Campbellsville did.
  • Both of BU's wins came by similar scores to that which CU won by as well with the Wildcats earning a 14-point win over Brescia and a nine-point win over Dillard, just a single point margin different than Campbellsville's wins.
  • Individually, the Wildcats are led by their front court of Mickey Head and Tyasia Willis as the pair combine to be their top-two scorers and rebounders.
  • Willis is averaging a double-double early on with 11 points and 10 rebounds per game through the two games with Head atop the BU scoring leaders with a 12 points per game average.
  • As a team, Bethel struggles from outside, shooting only 20.8 percent from deep through two games and has turned the ball over more than 20 times per game so far.

SCOUTING Martin Methodist
  • The Redhawks are currently sitting at 2-1 with all three of their games finishing with a single-digit margin of victory for the winning team.
  • Their wins came against Harris-Stowe State on the road and Cumberland University in overtime at home by finals of 77-71 and 71-66 respectively.
  • MMC is a solid rebounding and free throw shooting team with a +9.7 average rebounding margin and a 75.6 percentage from the free throw line through two games.
  • The Redhawks are prone to turning the ball over averaging over 23 giveaways per game while not forcing a big number of turnovers from their opponents with a -12.0 turnover margin through their three games.
  • Martin Methodist is led offensive by local Pulaski, Tenn. product Erin Freeman who has scored 20 points per game so far on 52.5 percent shooting from the field.

TIGER CLAWZ
  • CU has been powered behind strong efforts in third quarters so far this season, scoring 35 points in the third against Bethel and 27 points in the third against Dillard.
  • Combined scoring margin in those quarters was +39 as they were able to be outscored in both fourth quarters and still come away with comfortable final results of 13 and nine points.
  • Behind the top-two scorers of Gregory and Lexy Lake, the Lady Tigers got solid performances from Madison Faulkner, who scored double digits in each game with 10 points and eight rebounds against Dillard then 15 and six against Brescia.
  • Caitlin Hall has picked up her passing game right where she left off, leading each game in assists with eight against Dillard and nine against Brescia while adding 11 points against the Bearcats.

UP NEXT FOR CU
  • Campbellsville will continue with two-game classics when they head to Pikeville, Ky. next Friday and Saturday to face off against Simmons College of Kentucky and Marian University.
  • The Nov. 15 game against Simmons will be a 2 p.m. ET tipoff with the Nov. 16 game against Marian scheduled for a 10 a.m. ET start time.
