CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Looking to bounce back after a tough conference loss last Saturday, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team earned a 73-50 win over Simmons College of Kentucky at the Powell Athletic Center on Wednesday night.
The Tigers used a 20-3 run over the final 9:18 of the second half to pull away from the Falcons and eventually win by their largest margin of the game at 23 points. At the 929 mark of the second half, Campbellsville led 53-47 as Simmons cut the lead to six points before Campbellsville took off to finish the game on their 17-point advantage run.
CU was powered by guards
Richie Mitchell and
Taiveyhon Mason as the pair scored 18 and 19 points respectively. Mason scored 13 of this 19 in the first half and Mitchell was a big part of the second half run, scoring 12 points in the final 20 minutes to power his second-straight career-high effort after scoring 16 on Saturday.
Sophomore guard/forward
Sam Weining also had strong performance returning to the starting lineup on Wednesday. Weining was the third of three Tigers in double figures and he was a rebound away from a double-double after grabbing three offensive rebounds and six defensive boards for his final total of nine.
The rest of the CU supporting staff added 24 points led by nine from
Ronald Taylor, seven from
Jacob King, five from
Justin Tucker, and three from
Alston Davis.
Simmons was led in scoring by Jonathan Henry, who finished with a team-high 14 points as their only other player in double figures was Korey Mosley who finished with 11 on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point distance.
Campbellsville will be on a long layoff before they hit the court again as they will go on a 17-day break until after the Christmas holiday when they will head down to Williamsburg, Ky. for a pair of games at the University of Cumberlands Classic on Dec. 29-30.
