Midweek slugfest goes the way of the Grenadiers as they topple the Tigers 17-9

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Three days after totaling just two runs in 19 innings of baseball, a nine-run game wasn't enough to get the Tigers a win over Indiana University Southeast as the Grenadiers won 17-9 Tuesday afternoon at HIG Field.

Tuesday's game had everything one would expect from a midweek college baseball game as 16 total pitchers were used and the 26 total runs crossing the plate.

Early on, each club had four point lead erased in one inning as IU Southeast was the first to get on the scoreboard with a three-run first inning off of Tyler Deason then adding another in the second, also credited to Deason.

After getting the first-two runners on base in the first then coming up empty, CU did the same in the second but this time loaded the bases for the nine-hold hitter Marco Murillo. Murillo then cranked a grand slam over the left center field fence to tie the score at 4-4.

The Tigers added on after the slam, scoring in each of the next three innings to take their own four-run lead at 8-4. That's when the Grenadiers answered with their own big innings but instead of using the long ball, they chipped away at the CU lead.

Scoring five runs in the sixth off of Tiger reliever Mikey Hooper, IU Southeast took the lead back at 9-8 after three RBI hits and a groundout scoring a run.

Campbellsville first baseman Tony Fonzo brought life back to HIG Field with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, tying the score back up at 9-9.

Needing a shutdown inning, CU turned to Gage O'Brien, who finished the sixth inning in relief of Hooper, but he was his own worst enemy in the seventh inning. After walking the leadoff hitter, he induced a ground ball back to the mound but the Tigers were unable to get an out on the double play attempt. A wild pitch followed, scoring a run then the Grenadiers got their only home run of the day as cleanup hitter Cody Maloon hit a two-run shot to left center to give IU Southeast a 12-9 lead.

That would prove to be all they needed to pull out the win as they continued to score with a five-run eighth inning to finish with their eight-run margin at 17-9.

Campbellsville baseball is scheduled to host another game tomorrow against Midway and are set to travel to Tennessee for three games in four days against two teams but weather forecasts have that all in question at the moment.
