Phenomenal pitching and the long ball leads Lady Tigers sweep and Wathen to 600 wins

Head coach Shannon Wathen picked up win No. 600 after CU swept Brescia on Tuesday

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A break in the weather allowed Lady Tiger softball to host Brescia University Tuesday afternoon and pick up a pair of wins, 4-0 and 7-0.

The two wins improved the Lady Tigers to 7-1 overall on the young season but also pushed head coach Shannon Wathen's career win total to 600 in her 16 years at the helm.

Today's performance was mixed with of great pitching and the long ball. Morgan Gailor, Aleigha Talsma and Karson Williams shutout the Bearcats (2-4) as Gailor and Talsma both tallied eight strikeouts.

At the plate, it was Ryley Whitney hitting her third and fourth home runs of the year, while Lexi Miller, Dana Adkins and Payton Blades all hit solo shots. All three of those also were the first-career round trippers for their careers.

Miller has been on a tear the last four games. After only tallying two hits in the first four games of her career, the freshman from Madisonville, Ky. has gone 10-for-16 and scored four runs. Today, Miller went 3-for-3 in game one and 3-for-4 in game two.

Whitney had a nice day at the plate, hitting a pair of home runs to push her total to four on the year – which matches her entire total from her Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year campaign.

Game one: Campbellsville 4, Brescia University 0

Gailor (3-1) had only two blemishes on her start Tuesday afternoon – a leadoff walk in the third inning and a bloop single up the middle in the fourth. Outside of that, Gailor was flawless. She sat the Bearcats down 1-2-3 in five of the seven innings and saw one batter above the minimum of 21.

The lone inning Brescia had more than three batters come to the plate was the third – which started with the leadoff walk. After the free pass, the Lady Tigers committed their lone error of the day to put runners on first and second and no outs. But Gailor picked up a strikeout, a fielder's choice and another strikeout to end the Bearcats' threat.

Gailor finished the start with her third complete-game, allowing one hit, one walk and eight Ks in 79 total pitches.

In the fourth, Gailor allowed the single but Riley Hurst doubled-off McKayla Stewart at first base after a line drive out.

CU's offense came in two innings. The big blast was a three-run two-out homer by Whitney in the third. Miller drove in the fourth with an RBI single in the fifth.

Game two: Campbellsville 7, Brescia University 0

Talsma (3-0) allowed two walks and two hits but was also spectacular in the circle. She sat the Bearcats down 1-2-3 in back-to-back innings in the third and fourth and struck out a career-high eight to pick up the win.

She finished the day tossing six innings, allowed two hits, walked two and had eight Ks.

After Miller put the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0 with her solo shot in the second, CU hit three solo home runs in the sixth. Adkins led off the frame and with her first-career homer, while Payton Blades hit a one-out shot and Whitney followed with her second two-out home run of the day.

CU scored three more in the sixth and they all came without the long ball. After sending nine batters to the plate, Ryleigh Oldham delivered an RBI double and was followed with a two-RBI single by Blades.

Karson Williams pitched a perfect seventh inning to seal the victory in game two.
