Lady Tigers split on opening day of Gulf Shores Invite; Talsma shines in game two

GULF SHORES — A tale of two games was the difference on Day 1 of the Gulf Shores Invitational as the Lady Tigers were upset by Baker University 11-4 but defeated Ave Maria University 9-1 in five innings.

In game one, it was a 10-run fourth inning that saw the Lady Tigers go through three pitchers in order to stop the bleeding against the Baker Wildcats that are ranked No. 26 – just outside the Coaches' Poll. Outside of the fourth inning, the Lady Tiger pitching and defense were both solid.

In game two, it was a pair of four-run innings by the Lady Tigers in the third and fourth to run-rule the Gyrenes.

Aleigha Talsma had a solid night in game two, tossing a one-hitter and going 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. She improved to 4-0 on the year in the circle.

Game one: Baker 11, Campbellsville 4
The Wildcats scored a single run in the first inning, but Ryley Whitney answered in the top of the fourth with her fifth home run of the season – a solo shot to left field. The tie didn't last long though.

Morgan Gailor (3-2) gave up a solo shot to Kylee Snider and two more hits and a walk followed before Karson Williams entered the circle. Williams allowed two singles, a sacrifice bunt RBI, hit a batter and walked another to surrender seven runs – four of those to Gailor.

Anna Wantz entered as the third pitcher of the inning and was able to get out of the jam by allowing only one run to score in her Lady Tiger debut.

Baker's Olivia Brees shut down the Lady Tigers by tossing seven innings and striking out 13. Hannah Pemberton allowed three runs in the fifth but Brees re-entered in the circle to earn her fourth win of the season.

Game two: Campbellsville 9, Ave Maria 1
Talsma got the scoring going in the second inning with one out. She hit a liner over the left field fence for the first of her career.

CU brought a slew of Lady Tigers to the plate in the third, scoring four runs off four hits and an Ave Maria error. Ryleigh Oldham and Payton Blades both picked up one-out hits and Mia Aldridge walked to load the bases. Ryley Whitney then grounded into a fielder's choice but one of the two Gyrenes errors scored two runs for CU.

Talsma and Ryley Hurst both picked up RBI singles up the middle to put CU ahead, 5-0.

CU tallied four runs in the fourth inning as well and brought eight batters to the plate. Tori Humphrey got it going with a leadoff triple, Oldham singled and Blades drove the first run in with a sacrifice fly. After consecutive walks, Talsma stepped up with a two-run two-out hit up the middle to end scoring.

She finished tossing four innings, allowing only one hit on 56 pitches. Blades tossed the final inning, allowed a pair of hits and an unearned run.
