HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After splitting yesterday's pair of games, Campbellsville baseball won both games of Saturday's doubleheader. The Tigers won their first nine-inning game of the season in game one by a 4-1 score and the seven-inning game two 6-2.
CU's pitching staff was dominant on Saturday as six pitchers struck out a total of 20 batters in the 16 innings Saturday. Both starters,
Anthony Arias, who started game one, and
Eric Little, game two's starter, struck out five apiece as Arias did so in 5.1 innings and Little went four innings.
Arias went scoreless in his outing giving up only two hits and a walk in just 77 pitches in the game. Little gave up an earned run on four hits with a walk and a hit batter in game two.
The relievers did their jobs well for the Tigers too, giving up a combined two runs in 6.2 total innings of work for four pitchers.
Brenden Nipp,
Parker Loutensock,
Gage O'Brien each struck out three in their outings with
Mikey Hooper finishing off the two-win day with a strikeout in two innings of work. O'Brien picked up the save in game one after going 1.1 innings after Loutensock bridged between Arias and O'Brien.
It wasn't all pitching for CU as the Tigers banged two homers out of Milton Wheeler Field, one in each game.
Adbiel Morales went deep in game one with a three-run shot in the seventh inning to give Campbellsville a 4-0 lead.
Ian Nowak led off the second inning of game two with a solo shot to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead at the time.
Game one only saw the Tigers get five hits as
Austin Peterson and
Tyson Solis each had two-hit games to pair with the three-run dinger from Morales. There was a bit more offense in game two from Campbellsville as
Donnel Bailey got two base hits and Peterson added a two-RBI double for his second double of the day.
Tony Fonzo had a lot of production from the three-spot in the CU lineup, scoring two runs and driving in a run with one hit in game two.
The Tigers will stay on the road next week, first for a midweek game against Union on Tuesday then for another four-game series at Reinhardt University next Friday and Saturday.
