CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Tiger men's basketball earned their third-straight win Saturday afternoon with a nine-point victory over Life University at the Powell Athletic Center.
For most of the 40 minutes of the game, both teams were pretty loose with the ball as the Running Eagles and the Tigers had more turnovers than assists in the game. That was the first time for CU that their final turnovers as a team were higher than their final team assists.
Campbellsville was led offensively by
Stephaun Adams who came up a point short of a career-high with 29 points to lead all scorers in the game. Adams was 5-of-10 from three-point land while adding seven rebounds, four steals, and four assists.
The game started off rough for the Tigers shooting the ball as they started 0-for-7 from the field in the first three minutes of the game before
Deion Evans tipped in a miss for CU's first basket from the field. Shooting struggles continues through the first media timeout as Campbellsville went 5-for-14 (35.7%) from the field for the first 8:18 of the game.
During that time, Life and Campbellsville traded leads then the Running Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 25-20 with about six minutes left in the first half. The Tigers proceeded to go on a 12-0 run to take a 32-25 lead and never give up their lead for the rest of the game.
Adams was backed up by the trio of
Deion Evans,
Hagen Tyler and
Andrew Smith who each scored 14 points for CU.
Evans brought some energy to the gym early in the second half with a put back dunk after an Adams miss and two more baskets in the first five minutes of the half. Evans also grabbed six rebounds and recorded three steals in the game.
Tyler didn't have his best shooting game going 4-for-14 from the floor but added some clutch buckets for the Tigers late in the second half. The senior from Danville, Ky. hit the final two free throws of the game to cap the win and also hit a three-pointers with 2:37 left in the second half to extend Campbellsville's lead to 11 at the time.
Smith was a beast around the rim, pulling down 13 rebounds for his 11
th double-double of the season. Smith also rejected three shots in the game to move his career blocked shots total to 103 to move to second place in program history in career blocked shots, just two behind all-time leader Damontre Harris.
The Tigers now move to 5-5 in Mid-South Conference play and a tie for third place with University of the Cumberlands. The Tigers and Patriots will meet up on Monday at 6 p.m. ET in the Powell Athletic Center to make up their game from Thursday that was postponed.
