Lady Tigers roll past Cumberlands to claim first round MSC Tournament win, 77-44

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville has defeated University of the Cumberlands just two times by 30 or more points in the Ginger High Colvin era and both of those came this season. The Lady Tigers picked up a 33-point win over the Patriots in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament, 77-44.

The win improves the Lady Tigers to 29-2 on the year and now Campbellsville will face the winner of No. 4-seeded Lindsey Wilson and five-seeded Life University. That game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET in the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.

Of the five Lady Tigers that earned All-Conference honors last night, it was one that didn't get a mention to lead the way in the scoring column Friday morning. Madison Kaiser finished with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including three Edward Jones 3-pointers.

Savannah Gregory, the MSC Defensive Player of the Year, finished the day with 13 points, four assists and two steals. Jordan Doram, a Second-Team All MSC recipient, scored 13 points off the bench. The two combined to hit 11-of-14 from the floor and 26 points.

The lone Lady Tiger that didn't tally a point was First-Team All MSC point guard Caitlin Hall, but she finished with six assists.

Cumberlands entered the tournament averaging 18 turnovers per game but Campbellsville forced them to turn the ball over 29 times with the Lady Tigers scoring 34 points off those miscues.

The difference today was the Patriots didn't hit a field goal in the opening quarter – scoring only six points all from the free throw line. The Lady Tigers rolled from there.

Ending the first quarter, Kaiser nailed the first of three 3-point baskets as the ball hit around the rim and fell to put CU ahead 17-6 at the break. In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers started with a 9-0 run but Cumberlands answered with a 7-0 run itself. But that was the final punch the Patriots had for the second-ranked team in the country.

After coach Ginger High Colvin called a timeout to end the 7-0 run for UC, the Lady Tigers answered with a 9-5 run to close out the opening half – which also included Kaiser's second 3-pointer.

In the third quarter, Gregory and Kaiser both hit 3s before Doram came off the bench to capitalize on an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 4:10 mark to put CU ahead, 45-20.

The fourth quarter was a time for the youngsters to get quality playing time and all of them scored. Sammy Rogers got in on the action with a 3-pointer to put CU ahead, 64-37, and then Lexy Lake stepped back to former Lady Tiger Emily Fox range with a 25-footer as the shot clock expired with 3:45 left in the game.

Campbellsville will now await the winner of Lindsey Wilson and Life University for Sunday's Mid-South Conference quarterfinal match scheduled for 1 p.m. ET in the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.
