Lady Tigers sweep doubleheader over Cumberland with clutch swings and big power

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University softball team gave the Hord Field crowd plenty to cheer about during Saturday's doubleheader against Cumberland University. Campbellsville won game one 15-6 and game two 8-7 to earn their first two Mid-South Conference wins of the season.

In game two, the Lady Tigers trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before they rattled off five runs, all with two-outs in the inning.

After the first two batters of the inning made outs, Riley Whitney singled up the middle, followed by a Lexi Miller double and a Riley Hurst single that scored both. Hannah Judd also singled into left field bringing up Tori Humphrey, who sent a 2-and-2 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run home run to take the lead at 6-5.

The Phoenix took the lead right back in the top of the sixth, scoring twice, once with a solo home run from Tyra Graham off of Campbellsville starter Aleigha Talsma then on a two-out RBI single off of Karson Williams where the run was charged to Talsma after the runner reached on a single earlier.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Tigers got the bases loaded with no before Miller came up again with one out and the bases still loaded. Miller hit a fly ball deep to right that would have been good enough to score the tying run from third but it went over the outstretched glove of the outfielder all the way to the wall to score two for Campbellsville to take an 8-7 lead.

Miller was the most successful hitter of game two for Campbellsville, going 3-for-4 with those two RBIs. Williams stayed in the game for the seventh and pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 frame to finish the win off for the Lady Tigers.

Game one was an offensive onslaught for Campbellsville winning in five innings by the 15-6 final score. The Lady Tigers hit five home runs, including a pair of opposite field solo shots by Judd.

Other long balls came from Mia Aldridge, Riley Hurst and Humphrey as the junior third baseman finished the day with two home runs. Aldridge's home run was a three-run shot to left, Hurst's was also of the three-run variety to center prior to going back-to-back with Judd's second home run, and Humphrey's was a two-run homer in the third inning.

Morgan Gailor started the game in the circle and went four innings to pick up the win, allowing six runs, five earned on nine hits while striking out three. Williams also pitched an inning in relief in game one as she struck out a batter in four batters faced in the fifth.

The Lady Tigers and Phoenix will play an identical Saturday doubleheader seven days from now back at Hord Field to continue MSC play.
