CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Mid-South Conference opener for the Campbellsville University baseball team went the way of the Tigers by a 10-3 final Friday evening over the Shawnee State Bears at HIG Field.
CU scored seven runs in the first two innings of the game all driven in off the bats of
Tyler Deason and
Bryson Wallet as the pair each had run-scoring hits in the first and second innings.
Deason and Wallet hit back-to-back doubles in the first as the Tigers scored two in the first. Then in the second, Deason lined another double into left center with the bases loaded, scoring two before Wallet took a 2-0 pitch deep to left center for a three-run home run to make it 7-0 early on.
The Bears answered with a run in each of the next three innings, including scoring a run on a pair of RBI doubles from designated hitter Dalton Phillips in third and fifth innings. Phillips finished the game with those two doubles and a walk as the top performer for SSU at the plate on Friday.
Those three runs in the middle of the game knocked out CU starter
Anthony Arias who was an out short of qualifying for the win going 4.2 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks.
Brenden Nipp did pick up the win out of the bullpen, going 3.1 shutout innings allowing two hits and two walks against 13 batters.
Tigers' shortstop
Tommy Sepulveda had an outstanding day at the plate in the ninth spot in the Campbellsville batting order. Sepulveda went 4-for-5, scoring a run and driving in two at the bottom of the CU order with his big swing of the bat scored the final two runs for the Tigers in the eighth inning to push the score to 10-3.
SSU and CU will continue their three-game series tomorrow at no one with a doubleheader at HIG Field as the first game will be nine innings followed by a seven-inning final game.
