CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – With an important Mid-South Conference series looming this weekend, the Campbellsville University baseball team did not fall into the trap that was looking ahead as they beat Brescia University 11-1 Wednesday afternoon at HIG Field.
The Tigers finished off the game with a five-run seventh inning to get to the 10-run margin that called the game on the 10-run rule. It was somewhat of a slow offensive day for CU as they only recorded six hits to score 11 runs but they still found a way to win by 10.
Brescia's offense was held in check by Campbellsville starting pitcher
Marco Murillo who carried a no-hitter through five innings. The no-hitter was broken up in the sixth and the shutout was ended in the seventh but Murillo was outstanding finishing with 6.2 innings pitched, one earned run allowed on three hits and nine strikeouts with no walks allowed.
Murillo also drove in two runs at the plate with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning. CU scored four runs in that fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead after a fielding error on the Brescia second baseman also allowed two runs to score.
The five-run seventh inning was punctuated with a three-run home from
Donnel Bailey for the outfielder's fifth of the season. After Bailey's home run made the score 10-1
Cale Thompson reached base with a walk before finding his way to third on a wild pitch and a past ball. A pitch later,
Tommy Sepulveda cracked a single into left for Thompson to score the 11
th run of the game.
Thompson had a solid game at the plate as he got the start at second base with Murillo on the mound. The junior infielder went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, an RBI and adding a sacrifice bunt.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Tigers will travel to Williamsburg, Ky. for their first road Mid-South Conference series of the 2019 season against No. 11 University of the Cumberlands. The Patriots will be the highest rated team in the NAIA Coaches' Poll that CU has played this season as Cumberlands comes into the weekend with a 5-1 MSC record.
