Tigers are eight strokes out of the lead; Warman is one shot behind after opening round 70

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. — In their first tournament in over a month, Campbellsville men's golf is sitting only eight strokes behind the leaders at the Cumberland University Phoenix Invitational.

The Tigers shot a team score of 297 and are behind the host Phoenix by eight strokes (289).

Junior Justin Warman led the way with a one-under 70 and is one shot behind Lindsey Wilson's Callum Blinkhorn and Union University's Jordan Botwinick.

Warman started on the front nine and went out at three-over after a birdie on the par-four fourth hole, double on the par-three seventh and bogeyed the par-four ninth. Then he turned it on in the final nine holes.

He sunk back-to-back birdies on the 10^thand 11, fell back a stroke with a bogey on the par-five 12^th, but then went birdie-eagle on 13 and 14, respectively. If it wasn't for two bogeys on 17 and 18, Warman would be sitting in the lead.

Landon Connor currently sits in 11^thafter a career-best two-over 73. In total 15 golfers are within five strokes of the lead heading into Tuesday's final round. Connor was steady in the opening round with three birdies, three bogeys and a double. The double-bogey on the par-four 16^thput him back four strokes off the leaders.

Tied for 29^this Jonathan Brewington and Austin Mahoney. The duo shot matching 77s and are tied with Midway University's Cody French and Lindsey Wilson's Jeremiah Hayes. Mahoney had one birdie throughout this round but fell victim to seven bogeys overall.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Mark Murphy. He shot a 9-over 80 in the opening round to sit in a tied for 43nd. Murphy got in trouble on the fifth, 16^thand 18^thholes with three double bogeys. Outside of those three holes, he was consistent all day.

Cumberland University leads the team scored at 289, while Martin Methodist is in second with 291. Union University (NCAA DII) is third at 293, Campbellsville is fourth (297) and Lindsey Wilson is fifth (298).

The second round will start on Tuesday morning at Old Hickory Country Club.
