University of the Cumberlands spoils Lady Tiger doubleheader with game two win

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — A three-run first inning led the Lady Tigers to a 5-1 win in game one, but No. 14 Campbellsville lost its second game this week by one run in game two against University of the Cumberlands, 1-0.

Payton Blades extended her hitting streak to 18 games by going 2-for-4 in game one, including a leadoff double that started the first inning. She was joined by Mia Aldridge and Lexi Miller with two hits in game one, while Tori Humphrey led CU with two RBI, Miller had one and Aldridge had another.

In the circle, Morgan Gailor (15-3) battled out of multiple jams to toss another complete-game seven-hitter allowing only one run. Gailor also struck out eight batters – which matches her career-high.

Game two was a different story. The Lady Tiger offense was silent for the second-straight doubleheader and only tallied three hits. Jessica Webb tossed a complete-game striking out three.

Payton Blades was spectacular in her second-career start once again but CU's offense couldn't give her any runs. The freshman hurler allowed two hits through five innings, while Anna Wantz (1-2) pitched the sixth and allowed a run on a fielder's choice.

The two teams will meet against on Monday afternoon in Williamsburg starting with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. ET. CU also travels to Shawnee State University on Wednesday, April 24 for a make-up doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Portsmouth High School. Fans can tune into the CU Sports Network for all four road games next week.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Cumberlands 1

Blades led off the game once again with a double and after a sacrifice bunt by Mia Aldridge moved her to third, Riley Hurst worked a nine-pitch two-out walk setting up a Tori Humphrey double to deep left field scoring both runs.

Miller followed with the third double of the game scoring Humphrey to give Gailor a 3-0 lead before even stepping into the circle.

Gailor got into a jam in the third inning with a one-out walk and error in the circle to put runners on first and second. But she worked out of the jam with a liner to second base and ground ball back to the circle.

The fourth was a much bigger jam. Three-straight one-out singles loaded the bases for Cumberlands but Gailor picked up one of her eight strikeouts and a ground ball back to the circle again to get out of the UC rally.

CU struck again in the fifth inning with a single run. Aldridge singled to left, stole second base and Ryley Whitney drove her in with another Lady Tiger double.

In the fifth, Cumberlands finally was able to plate a run. Gailor allowed two walks in the inning and the Patriots scored on a wild pitch.

Cumberlands rallied in the seventh and brought six batters to the plate after a pair of hits and a bit by pitch but Gailor got out of the bases loaded jam. Cumberlands stranded 12 runners overall in game one.

Game two: Cumberlands 1, Campbellsville 0

Blades was solid once again, allowing only four base runners throughout five innings. Overall through the first four innings, neither team brought up more than four batters each inning.

In the fifth, Blades saw five Patriots but wiggled out of a jam with runners on second and third. The Patriots attempted a safety squeeze with Kayley Kilburn, but Tori Humphrey was able to hold the runners on the bunt and get the out at first.

Wantz entered in the sixth and allowed Hannah Stephenson to single and Emily Jasper to reach on a bunt base hit. The second fielder's choice of the inning allowed a run to score as a ground ball was hit to Kelly Wheeler and her attempt to turn a double play with shortstop Riley Hurst wasn't successful allowing Jasper to score from second base.

The Lady Tigers were only able to bring more than four batters just two times – the fourth and seventh innings. Webb had a no-hitter entering the sixth inning until Aldridge singled to center field.

The only other two hits came in the last inning when the Lady Tigers attempted a rally. Ryleigh Oldham and Wheeler both singled with two outs but Webb worked out of the jam to earn the upset win.
