Humphrey's two-run blast propels Lady Tigers to series split with Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Lady Tiger softball hadn't played back-to-back extra inning games in a doubleheader since the Dakstats era started in 2004 and today CU earned a split with University of the Cumberlands.

The Lady Tigers lost 4-3 in 10 innings but was able to salvage a series split with the Patriots, 2-0, in nine innings. The 2-0 win in the ninth inning keeps the streak alive – UC hasn't won a series over Campbellsville since 2004.

In game one, it took the international tiebreaker rule to decide a winner in the 10thinning. Cumberlands took advantage of an error and scored a pair of unearned runs to ruin Morgan Gailor's 10-inning outing.

In game two, Payton Blades was stellar once again tossing eight innings and didn't allow a run. She picked up the win after Tori Humphrey pelted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth. Gailor entered after a leadoff single in the ninth and struck out a pair of Patriots to earn her second save of the year.

Game one: Cumberlands 4, Campbellsville 3 (10 innings)

The Lady Tigers took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning with a solo home run by Riley Hurst – her 10thof the season. In the third, CU took a 2-0 lead after Humphrey drove in Dana Adkins with a sacrifice fly.

But that was all CU could muster until the 10thinning. Cumberlands scored twice in the bottom of the third inning after Hannah Stephenson hit a two-run home run off a 1-2 pitch up in the zone.

Tied 2-2, that's where it would stay until the 10thwhen the tiebreaker rule went into effect. Hurst was placed at second base and moved to third on a sac bunt by Ryley Whitney. She later scored on a Humphrey sac fly.

CU had a chance to extend the lead with two outs after Lexi Miller and Hannah Judd both singles and Ryleigh Oldham was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But Adkins popped up to left to end the rally.

Cumberlands' Jenna Howell was placed at second to start the bottom of the 10thand scored on an RBI ground ball by Emily Jasper. Sarah Biggerstaff reached on an error and later scored on a walk-off single by Maddie Sickau.

Gailor tossed 9.2 innings, allowed seven hits and two earned runs. The other two were unearned in the 10th

Game two: Campbellsville 2, Cumberlands 0 (9 innings)

The scoring was few and far between until Tori Humphrey uncorked a scoreless tie with a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth. She turned on a 3-2 change up to hit her 11thhomer of the season – retaking the team lead.

The Patriots were only able to get a base runner to third base three times overall. Blades worked around a one-out double in the third and fifth innings and then around two hits in the sixth thanks to a double play by the defense. After a leadoff single by Stephenson, Emily Jasper couldn't get a sac bunt down and ended up lining out to Hurst at shortstop. But Stephenson was doubled off first base. UC picked up a double in its next at bat that ruined a run-scoring chance.

In the eighth, Blades allowed back-to-back one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases but wiggled out of the jam with a fielder's choice and infield pop-up.

After Humphrey gave CU a 2-0 lead, Blades allowed a leadoff single and was pulled for Morgan Gailor. Gailor allowed a two-out walk but picked up a fly ball and strikeout to end the game.
