NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Campbellsville University baseball team keep the offense rolling Tuesday evening in their 12-6 win over Indiana University Southeast in their first game in New Albany, Ind. in four meetings against the Grenadiers.
The Tigers scored eight runs in the first three innings powered by a five-run second inning that saw CU bring 10 batters to the plate. The other big inning for CU was in the sixth when they scored three, two of the runs came across on wild pitches with the bases loaded.
Campbellsville used action on the base paths in the fifth to get some runs across the plate with their first run scoring on a first and third double steal. Later in the inning they called a hit and run on a first and third with
Tyler Deason grounding a ball perfectly to the vacated shortstop position as the shortstop was covering the second base bag on the steal attempt.
Deason got a hit in each of his first three at bats on his way to finishing 3-for-5 in the game with three RBIs hitting in the two-spot in the batting order as the DH on Tuesday.
Four players in the Tigers' lineup finished with RBIs in the game as
Tony Fonzo,
Tommy Sepulveda, and
Brandon Douglas all drove in runs for CU in the game. Campbellsville only had eight RBIs as a team as four runs were scored on either passed ball or wild pitches from the Grenadiers.
Fonzo had two RBIs in the first two innings with an RBI groundout in the first to get the Tigers on the board followed by a sacrifice fly in the second for the fifth run of the five-run second.
Sepulveda had a day to remember as the junior shortstop went 5-for-5 from the nine spot in the CU order with two runs scored and two RBIs. Four of his five hits were singles as he added a double down the left field line in the fifth with his RBIs coming on two of his singles, one in the second and one in the sixth.
Douglas went 1-for-3 in his third-straight start behind the plate for Camopbellsville dating back to last weekend. His RBI came in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in the 12
thrun of the game for CU with his hit coming to lead off the five-run second inning, where he also made the final out of the inning.
The Tiger pitching staff on the day worked their game plan well enough to get the win on the day.
Aaron Hutchinson started on the mound for CU and went three innings allowing an earned run on three hits with two walks and two strikeout to earn the win. Despite not going the five innings usually needed to qualify for a win, Hutchinson still picked up the win to move to 2-0 due to the establishment from the CU coaching staff on the workload of each pitcher in the game.
After Hutchinson, Campbellsville got two innings each from
Jesse Davis,
Brenden Nipp and
Marco Murillo. Murillo was the most effective out of the three relievers as the senior went the final two innings of the game allowing two unearned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Davis and Nipp both struggled with command at times in their two innings as Davis had a span of four-straight batters where he walked three and hit one to allow a run to score with Nipp hitting the first two batters in his first inning of work in the sixth as one runner did come into score.
That is the second win for the Tigers over Indiana Southeast on the season after going 1-2 in the first three games played in Campbellsville. These two teams will meet one more time in New Albany on April 22 to start the final week of the regular season for CU.
Campbellsville will look ahead to their third Mid-South Conference series fo the season and second-straight road series at University of Pikeville starting this Friday. The Tigers and Bears are separated by a game in the MSC standings early on with CU at 4-2 and UPike at 3-3.
