Pikeville claims game two walk-off to spoil softball's doubleheader sweep

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — It was a tale of two games for Lady Tiger softball as Campbellsville won 10-1 but Pikeville ruined the sweep with a 7-6 win in its last at-bat in game two.

The Mid-South Conference doubleheader is the second straight split for the Lady Tigers as CU goes to 20-5 overall and 6-2 inside conference play.

It was another day where the Lady Tigers relied on the long ball as Campbellsville hit five home runs in the doubleheader. But it was the pitching and defense that let them down at times. The Lady Tigers fell victim to two errors in game one with one the lone run for the Bears scoring off one of the miscues. After leading 1-0 in game two, it was a six-run second inning for the Bears and Campbellsville could not recover all the way.

Tori Humphrey and Payton Blades led the Lady Tigers at the plate. Humphrey went 5-for-7, scored three runs and drove in one while Blades was 6-for-9, hit two home runs, scored five runs and drove in four.

In the circle, Morgan Gailor (9-3) picked up the win and loss in the two games. She was spectacular in game one, tossing six innings and allowed only one unearned run on three hits. In game two, she relieved Karson Williams and Anna Wantz and was the pitcher of record in the seventh when UPIKE scored the game-winning run on a walk-off sac bunt. She went 2.2 innings, allowed three hits and a walk – which ended up being the game-winner.

Game one: Campbellsville 10, Pikeville 1

Blades delivered a leadoff home run to start the game – the first leadoff homer of her career – to put CU ahead 1-0. UPIKE answered with its lone run in the second inning and then the Lady Tigers put up crooked numbers in the third, fourth and seventh.

In the third, Mia Aldridge double to left field and was followed by Ryley Whitney pelting a two-run home run. Now leading 3-1 in the fourth, Blades singled in a run, Aldridge hit her second double but this time a two-RBI shot, and Riley Hurst delivered an RBI single to put CU ahead, 7-1.

The score would stay there until the seventh. Humphrey and Blades both homered in the frame. Humphery delivered a solo shot and Blades picked up a two-run bomb.

In the circle, Gailor allowed only two batters to reach in her final three innings – one was a dropped third strike and the third was a walk.

Anna Wantz saw action in the last inning and worked a perfect frame, earning her first-career strikeout.

Game two: Pikeville 7, Campbellsville 6

The Lady Tigers took another 1-0 lead in the first inning once again and it all started with Payton Blades. She singled to start the game, moved to second on an Aldridge sac bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Whitney.

Williams was chased in the second inning after the Bears scored six runs in the frame – all with two outs. She worked two straight pop ups to Hurst at shortstop but then seven straight batters reach, including a three-run triple by Mercedes Boggs, RBI single by Jordan Gentry and two-run double by Haley Osborne.

Wantz entered in the second and allowed a couple hits and one run before getting out of the jam. Leading now 6-1, the Bears were sat down 1-2-3 by Wantz in the third and fourth innings.

The fifth inning was another big rally for the Lady Tigers and it all started with Brandi Garmon earning a pinch-hit walk. She walked and was followed with a double by Blades to put runners on second and third. Aldridge then delivered a single to cut the deficit to four, 6-2, before Riley Hurst followed with a three-run blast over the left-center fence.

Ryleigh Oldham was the ninth batter of the inning and tied the game at 6-6 with a run-scoring double.

Gailor sat down Pikeville 1-2-3 in the fifth and sixth innings but the seventh a leadoff walk came back to haunt. After the walk, Mackenzie Pawlak singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Osborne moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt to setup the game-winning play.

Runners now on second and third with one out, Shelby White followed with another sacrifice to down the third base line to score Jordan Gentry.

Hannah Skaggs (10-8) picked up the win after allowing six runs off 10 hits and striking out three.
