Wantz earns first-career win as Lady Tigers back her up with long ball to secure series win

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger softball hit five more home runs and picked up solid pitching to secure the series win over University of Pikeville on Sunday afternoon.

Campbellsville (22-6, 7-2 MSC) won game one 5-0 and game two 16-4 over Pikeville (20-14, 3-7 MSC).

Tori Humphrey, Hannah Judd, Payton Blades, Ryley Whitney and Lexi Miller all hit home runs in the doubleheader, while Morgan Gailor (10-3) and Anna Wantz (1-0) picked up wins in the circle.

In the last eight games, the Lady Tigers are averaging 11.8 runs per game and currently rank No. 1 by averaging 1.7 home runs per contest.

Offensively, Blades went 4-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored and two RBI in the two games, while Mia Aldrdige also tallied four hits and scored four runs. The middle of the order did a lot of damage today as Whitney drove in two runs and scored three herself.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Pikeville 0

Gailor pitched a gem in the circle by only allowing four hits and striking out seven. In the final five innings, Gailor sat down 14 of the final 15 batters. The lone blemish on her line was a two-out walk in the fourth.

Offensively, it was Blades starting the game with a single and scoring on a sac fly by Riley Hurst. Blades picked up hits to lead off each game of the series and the Lady Tigers scored to take at least 1-0 lead each contest.

The fourth inning was another kind frame for CU as the Lady Tigers broke the game open with a four-run spot. It all started with a double by Aldridge and she scored on consecutive wild pitches to put CU ahead, 2-0. Hurst drew a six-pitch walk and was followed with Humphrey's 10th home run of the season – which ranks in the Top 10 in the NAIA.

Just two batters later, Hannah Judd hit a moon shot over the left field fair pole for her fourth long ball of the season.

Gailor then sat down 11 of the last 12 batters to earn her 10thwin.

Game two: Campbellsville 16, Pikeville 4

The two programs had to sit through a 53 minute rain delay but it was the Lady Tigers lead 2-0 just before the weather halted play. Blades once again led off the game with a single, Aldridge followed suit and both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Ryley Whitney drove a run in with a ground out and Riley Hurst legged out an infield single to put CU ahead 2-0.

Then the rain came and forced play to stop for just under an hour. Anna Wantz' starting debut was put on hold for a little bit but when the delay was over, Wantz was really good. The Bears worked two straight singles to start the bottom of the first but then Wantz worked out of the jam unscathed.

In the second, she sat the Bears down 1-2-3 and then CU scored four runs in the third. The rally started with singles by Aldridge and Whitney and they moved up a base with a double steal. After a Hurst walk, it was Humphrey driving in a run with a ground out and then Lexi Miller delivered a three-run blast to put CU ahead, 6-0.

The Bears' bats woke up in the home half of the third. It was a two-run homer by Jordan Gentry cutting the CU lead to four runs, 6-2.

The Lady Tigers got those runs right back though in the fourth. Whitney hit a solo home run and Humphrey drove in Hurst with an RBI double to the right-center gap.

The Lady Tigers then went ahead 10-2 with another pair of runs in the fifth. Blades drove in Ryleigh Oldham with a single and then later scored on a wild pitch.

The Bears cut the run-rule lead to seven with a single run in the fifth. One out away from the run rule, Hannah Absher picked up an RBI single to cut the lead to seven, 10-3.

The run came back to CU in the sixth. Oldham delivered a sacrifice fly to score Hannah Judd. Leading now 11-3, the Bears punched another run across the plate to ruin another run-rule attempt after a leadoff home run by Karr.

Payton Blades entered in the circle and got the Lady Tigers out of the jam only giving up one run. Wantz finished the day going five innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out one.

CU tallied five runs in the seventh. Blades picked up a solo home runs, Aldridge scored on a wild pitch, Miller and Judd both drove in runs with singles and Humphrey capped the scoring by crossing the plate on another wild pitch.
