PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University baseball team had a rough go of it Sunday morning into the afternoon against the University of Pikeville Bears as the Tigers fell in a 6-0 shutout.
Defense told most of the story in Sunday's series finale as CU committed four errors relatively early in the game with UPike not having a single error charged to them through nine innings. The four errors led to three unearned runs being scored off of Campbellsville starter
Tyler Deason on their way to scoring four runs in the first two innings.
In the first, Deason got two quick outs after the first two batters but then back-to-back hits scored a run but an error in left field allowed Jay Vincent, who had the RBI single, to advance to second base where he was later knocked in on another two-out single to give the Bears an early 2-0 lead.
The very next inning, it was three Tiger errors that helped Pikeville put another two-spot on the board. After a similar error in center field to the one in left in the previous inning led off the inning with a runner on second, the next batter ground a ball to shortstop that was also misplayed for an error.
The final error was made on a steal attempt from Tyler Menrath with runners on first and third as the throw to second was off target and got into center field allowing the runner from third to score easily.
The UPike offense was only able to put together innings of a single run twice after the second inning to finish with their six-run total.
Jesse Davis did a fine job out of the CU bullpen to keep the Bears at six as Davis went 2.2 innings of shutout ball without allowing a hit as well.
The best chance for scoring for the Tigers in the game was in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. An unfortunate set of circumstances ended the inning for CU and it wasn't with the batter retiring.
Tommy Sepulveda was at the plate and facing a 3-1 pitch from Pikeville starting pitcher Brady Cappe. Cappe's pitch was called a strike on the outside corner by the home plate umpire and the borderline pitch combined with a slow strike call and Sepulveda taking a few steps towards third base sent
Donnel Bailey off of first base and towards second. With the ball still in play and a full count on Sepulveda, the first baseman got the attention of his catcher to throw the ball to first and tag out Bailey, ending the inning without Sepulveda getting a chance to hit with a full count and two outs.
Cappe was a workhorse on Sunday, finishing the full nine innings for the complete game and shutout for the Bears. He limited the Tigers to only six hits in nine innings with three walks and three strikeouts as UPike played well defensively behind him.
The offensive standout in the game for the Tigers was
Marco Murillo as the senior went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles and a double from the nine-spot in the batting order.
This game ended a stretch of seven-straight road games for Campbellsville as they will return home for five games at HIG Field next week starting on Tuesday against University of Rio Grande for a doubleheader. The next Mid-South Conference series for CU will be next weekend at home against Cumberland University.
