Corban puts pressure on CU defense and capitalizes with 8-2 win in Opening Round

GULF SHORES — Corban University had the leadoff batter on base in the final six innings and would score in each to steal game one away of the NAIA Opening Round Championship from No. 15 Campbellsville, 8-2.

The Lady Tigers are now in the elimination bracket of the Opening Round Championship hosted at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. CU (33-14) will play the loser of the four-seeded Edward Waters and top-seeded Mobile game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET.

The Warriors (37-14) will now play the winner at Noon ET tomorrow.

Corban put it to the Lady Tigers today and Campbellsville only answered the call one time. The Warriors chased Morgan Gailor (16-8) out of the circle after only tossing three innings and freshman righty Payton Blades wasn't much better allowing four walks.

Of the seven-total innings, the Warriors had the leadoff batter reach in six of them and it came around to score each time. The 10th best base-running steal in the country also swiped five bases on the day to push their total to 127 on the year.

Corban's Sam Woodley delivered the game's first run – a solo homer to lead off the second inning. Gailor worked out of a major jam only allowing the one run to cross. In the third, it was a leadoff single by Tatum Prechtel as she came around to score on a sac fly by Jessie Isham. After only allowing the two Corban runs, Gailor stranded three in the first two frames.

But after a leadoff walk in the fourth, coach Shannon Wathen went to Blades and she walked the first batter she saw. The Warriors scored both runs to lead 4-0.

Campbellsville was able to get the two runs right back after Ryley Whitney doubled to lead off the home-half of the fourth and Tori Humphrey was hit by a pitch. Hannah Judd delivered a two-run double to the right-center field gap to plate both.

But that was all the offense CU could muster. The Lady Tigers had the bases loaded in the second and couldn't muster a run and had runners in scoring position in the the sixth but went scoreless.

Overall, Whitney and Judd both had two hits each to lead the Lady Tigers.

The flood gates opened after that the fourth. A leadoff walk to Isham in the fifth on four pitches ended up scoring on an RBI double by Woodley. In the sixth, a misplayed line drive in right field turned into a triple for Prechtel to score another run and then an RBI single by Mahina Chong put the Warriors up 7-2.

Corban picked up an insurance run in the seventh after the leadoff was hit by a pitch.

Gailor lasted only three innings, allowing three earned runs, walking two and striking out two. Blades went four frames, allowing four earned runs and walking four.

The Lady Tigers will face elimination on Tuesday against the loser of four-seeded Edward Waters and No. 1-seed Mobile. First pitch of the loser's bracket is at 2 p.m. ET.
