On the brink of elimination, Lady Tiger softball rallies to punch ticket to Opening Round finals

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Needing two wins to keep their season alive, Campbellsville University softball came through on the brink of elimination. The Lady Tigers defeated Edward Waters, 5-0, and then come from behind to end Corban University's season, 7-6.

The two wins move the Lady Tigers (35-14) into the finals against top-seeded Mobile University on Wednesday at Noon ET. Campbellsville will have to beat the Rams twice to punch its ticket to the second NAIA World Series in program history.

It was a long day on Tuesday but totally worth it. Lady Tiger softball arrived at the park at 11 a.m. and didn't leave until 6:00. But the seven hours spent at the yard turned into two wins – one of those after being down 6-2.

That's where we pick up today's recap. Corban University (37-16) went ahead 6-2 after the top of the fifth inning and the Lady Tigers had their backs against the wall. In the fifth, Ryley Whitney drove in a run, but the rally ended after a 6-4-3 double play.

The offense had struggled since hitting nine home runs against Lindsey Wilson in the finale of the regular season but that quickly changed tonight. After relief pitcher Anna Wantz (2-2) worked a clean sixth inning, the bats came alive.

Tori Humphrey delivered her third hit of the night with one-out to start the rally. Aleigha Talsma, who hadn't had a hit since March 12, came through for an infield seeing-eye single, and Ivy Hedgespeth made a heads up baserunning move going first to third on the single by Talsma.

Senior Kelly Wheeler wasn't ready for her career to end and delivered an infield single up the middle to score Hedgespeth and cut the lead to two, 7-5. With runners on second and third after a pair of stolen bases, Payton Blades grounded out to score Talsma and the Warriors changed pitchers.

Lauren Besse came to the circle and the Lady Tigers made the rookie pay. Riley Hurst saw four pitches – all balls from Besse – to load the bases for CU's hottest hitter, Ryley Whitney. She uncorked an 0-1 pitch to leftfield for a ground-rule double scoring Mia Aldridge and Wheeler to put CU ahead, 7-6 (side note – it would have cleared the bases, but the ground rule double forced Hurst to go back to third).

Wantz came back in for the seventh, allowed a two-out bloop-single, but sealed the win with a groundout to Wheeler at second base.

Morgan Gailor started in the circle and lasted only four innings, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. Wantz tossed three innings, allowed one run on four hits.

Corban tossed out three pitchers in the circle. Ally Crakes started and lasted only into the second inning before Alyssa Vidal came in and went four innings, allowed nine hits and five runs. Besse allowed the game-winning hit for the loss.
Campbellsville 5, Edward Waters 0

The Lady Tigers scored all five runs in the first-three innings and Payton Blades tossed a complete-game shutout to seal the first elimination game victory. She allowed only four hits – all to the six, seven, eight, and nine batters, but blanked the top of the order.

Blades started the day with a leadoff home run and Kelly Wheeler put CU ahead, 2-0, after a suicide squeeze scoring Hannah Judd

In the third, Blades reached on error and scored on a Whitney single up the middle. Then Humphrey scored another after the second error by the Edward Waters Tigers. Judd put CU up 5-0 with a sac fly.

Blades (6-2) allowed only two hits in the final three innings and sat down the final seven batters for Edward Wates for the win.

Edward Waters ended its season with a 13-21 record after going 0-2 in the NAIA Opening Round.
