BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Campbellsville baseball was able to pull off back-to-back upsets in their first two games of the Mid-South Conference Tournament as they knocked the No. 1 seed University of the Cumberlands into the losers' bracket with a 6-2 win on Friday.
After a dominating performance on the mound from starter
Anthony Arias yesterday, it was a strong six-inning performance from the bullpen that allowed CU to comeback from down 2-0 after the third inning.
The Tigers got three scoreless innings from
Gage O'Brien and a scoreless inning from
Jesse Davis as both pitchers saw action on back-to-back days after helping combine for the one-hitter against Georgetown yesterday afternoon. The final six outs were recorded by
Malcom Grady as he only allowed one base runner for the two-inning save.
UC's 2-0 lead came in the third as outfielder Rowdy Martinez hit a no-doubt two-run home run to left field off of CU starter
Tyler Deason. Deason was able to battle through the third inning to keep the score at 2-0 before he was removed from the game on the mound by O'Brien.
Deason would come up big for the Tigers at the plate later in the game but before that Campbellsville needed to climb back into the game and they did that in the fifth and seventh innings, scoring a run in each inning to eventually tied the score at 2-2.
First in the fifth it was a two-out RBI single from
Chris Taitague, scoring
Tony Fonzo from second base. It was Taitague's second hit of the game as he has recorded two hits in each of the Tigers' first two tournament games, finishing Friday 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
In the seventh, it was another two-out situation with runners on first and second but this time head coach
Beauford Sanders made a call to his bench. He called the number of
Jack Bauer and Bauer delivered with a single to left on a 1-1 pitch, scoring Taitague from second base to tie the game at 2-2.
That was followed by the shutdown inning from Davis in the bottom of the seventh to keep the score tied for the Tigers to come back to the plate with the heart of the order due up in the eighth.
Tyson Solis walked on four-straight pitches then Deason rocketed a single to right center that was whiffed by Martinez as he attempted to field the ball on the ground. As the ball went deeper into the gap, Solis to attempted to score from first and the relay was late and off target allowing Deason to also advance to third as the score moved to a 3-2 Campbellsville advantage.
As the inning continued, Cumberlands called to two more relief pitchers who combined to walk in three more runners with the bases loaded to help the Tigers push their lead to a four-run advantage at the final score of 6-2.
That advances Campbellsville to the championship game one to be played on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT/7:00 p.m. ET back at Bowling Green Ball Park. CU could face Cumberlands, Georgetown, or Cumberland as the last two teams listed are playing the final game Friday night to play Cumberlands tomorrow prior to the first championship game.
