Eight extra base hits and Blades' gem in the circle leads softball to MSC win over UPIKE

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Of the 14 hits, Lady Tiger softball had eight extra base knocks and Payton Blades tossed a gem in the circle en route to a 8-1 win over University of Pikeville.

The win moves Campbellsville into the MSC Softball Tournament winner's bracket and the Lady Tigers will face six-seeded Shawnee State at 9:30 p.m. ET after the Bears upset three-seeded Cumberlands, 2-0.

The scoring didn't take long for CU to get on the board as Blades narrowly missed a leadoff home run by inches – bouncing off the top of the wall and having to settle for a double. Mia Aldridge followed suit with a double on the second pitch of the inning to put CU ahead, 1-0.

The Lady Tigers tallied two more doubles in the frame – and five more hits to lead 5-0 after a half inning. Lexi Miller tallied a two-run double and ended up scoring on a wild pitch herself – the second of the inning – and CU rolled after that.

CU scored another run in the second inning after chasing Hannah Absher out of the circle after lasting only one inning. A leadoff hit by pitch to Blades came around to score on an RBI double Riley Whitney.

Leading 6-0, UPIKE got a run back in the third with a solo home run by Jordan Gentry. But that was the only blemish of the day for Blades in the circle. She finished by allowing seven hits and struck out two to improve to 3-1 overall.

The offense scored two more runs in the fifth inning for a little insurance. Miller reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Hannah Judd. Ryleigh Oldham followed with her first-career triple to left field to drive in Judd and give CU a 8-1 lead.

The defense was solid behind Blades as the Lady Tigers tallied three double plays. After a leadoff single in the fourth by Emme Barker, she was doubled off first after a lineout to Kelly Wheeler at second base. The second double play was a smooth 4-6-3 twin killing turned by Wheeler and Riley Hurst up the middle. The third was another line-out double play catching the Bears off the base. In the sixth inning, Kelsey White reached on a fielder's choice and Aldridge caught a liner at first to double off the baserunner.

Megan Claypoole relieved Absher in the circle and tossed the final five innings for UPIKE. She allowed three runs off seven hits and struck out five.

The Bears now play University of the Cumberlands at 10 p.m. ET in an elimination game.
