Tiger and Lady Tiger athletics claim NCCAA Presidential Award for second-straight year

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced the 2018-19 Presidential Award standings at the national convention and Campbellsville University won the award for the Division I programs for the second straight season.

CU athletics totaled 84 points throughout the span of 2018-19 to outlast Grace College by 13.5 points (70.5).

The Tigers and Lady Tigers earned points in all 12 of the NCCAA Championships CU competed in, including one team national championship – men's tennis. Head coach Kyle Caven led the Tigers to their fourth NCCAA National Championship.

"This is an outstanding honor to not only our coaches and student-athletes but also to our athletic department and university as a whole," said Director of Athletics, Jim Hardy. "At the NCCAA level, we had the men's tennis team win another national title and track and field had five individual champions, which is the most in a single year in the history of our athletic department.

"Hard work is paying off on the fields and courts and we are honored to partner with the NCCAA and its mission of Christ-centered athletic competition as an integral component of education, evangelism and encouragement."

The men's tennis championship is the fourth in program history and third in the last five seasons, while the track and field programs brought home multiple individual championships. Head coach Mark Miller led the men's and women's track and field teams to five individual titles – Garland Webb (outdoor and indoor, triple jump), Haley Payton (indoor, triple jump), Sam Kiser (outdoor, 800m), and Corbin Harris (indoor, 5000m).

After the fall season, CU athletics totaled 45 points across seven teams. Men's cross country led the way in the fall with nine points, while men's and women's golf both tallied eight.

In the spring, CU finished with 39 points. After tennis tallied 12 points, women's track and field had eight and men's track and field had seven.

In the five championships Campbellsville didn't tally points for at the NCCAA level, the institution was competing in men's basketball, women's basketball, softball and baseball due to making the NAIA Championship. The 2019 NCCAA Women's Tennis tournament was canceled due to participation levels from across the country being low.

Biola University led the country with four national championships in women's golf, men's cross country, women's cross country and women's bowling. But it only competed in seven of the 17 championships.

In addition to the NCCAA, Campbellsville also had an individual national title in women's wrestling as Andribeth Rivera won the NAIA title at 130 lbs. Also, Rachel Woosley won the USCA Archery National Championship to total eight titles throughout the year in respective associations.
