Tigers ready to get back to work with home opener against No. 10 Reinhardt

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Fighting Tiger football will head into their second week of action and their home opener against Reinhardt University after dropping their 2019 season opener 40-24 against Lindsey Wilson College on Aug. 29.

Kickoff between CU and the Eagles will be at 1:30 p.m. ET at Finley Stadium as the voice of Tiger football, Jim Freeman, will be on the call Saturday afternoon with color analyst Matt Payton on WLCU TV, Comcast Channel 10, online on the CU Sports Network and on the radio on 88.7 The Tiger.

TIGER CLAWZ
  • This was originally supposed to be their third game of the regular season but they had to postpone and reschedule their week two matchup at Southeastern University after the threat of Hurricane Dorian forced the hand of both institutions and the game will now be played on Sept. 28 in Lakeland, Fla. at 7 p.m. ET.
  • Quarterback play seemed to be the deciding factor on how the offense moved the ball in the season opener against the Blue Raiders and starting quarterback Chris Lubinsky struggled to get anything going in the passing game but back-up Chase Wilson got the offense firing on all cylinders in the second half. Wilson finished 16-22 for 209 yards with two touchdowns, one passing and one running, as Lubinsky only went 9-14 for 44 yards and an interception over the first 30 minutes.
  • CU was a force in the running game as they finished the game with 173 rushing yards on 36 carries for an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Led by 80 yards and 5.3 yards per carry from David Richardson, Campbellsville had four ball carriers with over 4.7 yards per carry on the night.
  • Despite giving up 40 points against Lindsey Wilson, the Tiger defense had flashes of success finishing the game with four sacks, 10 pass break-ups and five tackles for a loss.

SERIES FACTS: OFFENSIVE SHOWCASES
  • Not a long and extensive history of head-to-head match-ups like some of CU's other opponents this season but when the Eagles and Tigers get together, fans usually get their money's worth in terms of points being put on the board.
  • In the series, Campbllsville has averaged 42.3 points per game and Reinhardt has averaged 51.3 points per game.
  • In terms of wins, both teams have taken two games in their four-game history with each team winning a home game and a road game.
  • The last time both of these teams played in Campbellsville (Nov. 7, 2015) the game determined the Mid-South Conference Champion as the Tigers came out on top with a huge 70-56 win. That game set CU records for points in a game by, passing touchdowns and yards by Jacob Russell, and extra points in a game by Will Ward.
  • The Eagles got their payback the very next season in Waleska, Ga. as they rolled over the Tigers 69-20 on Nov. 5, 2016. That game kept Reinhardt undefeated at 9-0 on the season and pushed the Tigers to a 1-8 record.

SCOUTING REINHARDT UNIVERSITY
  • The high scoring nature of the Eagles may be a thing of the past as Reinhardt has scored only 20 and 16 points to average just 18 points per game in their first two games in wins to start 2-0.
  • Both games were at home as they will play their first road game on Saturday after beating Webber International 16-6 in week one and Pikeville 20-17 in overtime in week two.
  • The Eagle offense is a very run-heavy attack as RU averages 271 rushing yards per game while only averaging 103 passing yards per game over the first two games of the season.
  • Defensively they are only allowing 274 yards per game and 11.5 points per game limiting their opponents rushing attack to 100.5 yards per game holding the opposing passing attack under 200 yards per game.

A TALE OF TURNOVERS
  • Ball security hurt Campbellsville in their last match-up against Lindsey Wilson as they lost the turnover margin 3-0 as the Blue Raiders went turnover free in the season opener.
  • The Tigers suffered two fumbles and an interception, all three giving LWC short fields where the turned those short fields into points on all three times with two field goals and a touchdown.
  • Not an official turnover in the books, Campbellsville also took a turnover on downs in the second quarter around the goal line when the Blue Raider defense stuffed a Keanu Neal scoring attempt on a short pass.
  • The combined 13 points off of turnovers for Lindsey Wilson and the potential points kept off the board on the second quarter turnover on downs, either a field goal or a touchdown, that equaled the 16-point margin of victory for the Blue Raiders, who won 40-24.
  • The final fumble turned out to be the back breaker as David Richardson's fourth quarter fumble came with CU holding good field position down nine but LWC took the ball and scored a touchdown to make it 40-24 with 7:41 left.

BIG PLAY POTENTIAL
  • The four scoring drives for the Tigers on Aug. 29 were carried by big plays from the CU offense or special teams. As a whole, Cambellsville had seven plays of at least 20 yards or longer in the game.
  • The longest pass of the game came from Chase Wilson to Kendon Young for 38 yards. That play was followed by a QB sneak by Wilson to score and make the game a three-point game.
  • Keanu Young busted the longest run of the game for the Tigers on a 41-yarder in the first quarter that helped lead to the CU field goal as their first score.
  • Campbellsville was also big on the kick return as a 50-yard return from Kendon Young helped lead to that first field goal and a 52-yard Ziyon Kenner return led to a 20-yard Zach Cole touchdown reception to make the score 27-24 LWC.

FRESHMEN STEPPING IN AND STEPPING UP
  • Whether it has been due to injury, depth, or performance, freshman have been thrust into prominent roles for the Tigers, mainly on the offensive side of the football.
  • On the offensive line, a host of freshman are either listed as backups or starting for the Tigers this Saturday. Led by starting right tackle Ethan Gossage, CU has four different o-line depth positions filled by freshmen including Lane Bottoms, Chase Smith, and Jansen Craig.
  • After senior captain Keanu Young suffered a shoulder injury a few freshman will be stepping into a couple of positions formerly filled by Young. Blake Baker and Glenn Covington will get the players filling in on offense at the H Slot receiver position with Baker also filling in as the primary punt returner and Duece Shreve will fill in as the holder on field goals.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Tigers will be back on the road next week as they will head to Barbourville, Ky. to face Union College on Saturday Sept. 21.
  • Kickoff for the Bulldogs and Tigers will be at 7 p.m. ET and it will start a stretch of four-straight games for the football team to have 7 p.m. ET kickoffs.
