CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University football team suffered a first under head coach
Perry Thomas as they were shutout 28-0 by Reinhardt University on Saturday afternoon at Finley Stadium.
The last time the Tigers took a scoreless loss was in the season opener of 2007 against Ohio Dominican.
It was all ground game for both teams for most of the game, especially in the first half, but even more all Reinhardt as they went into the break up 21-0. Behind a total of 188 yards of rushing with 96 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns from quarterback Billy Hall, the Eagles pounded their rushing attack against CU's defense over the first two quarters.
The Eagles scored on three different drives of over 80 yards with the two rushiung touchdowns from Hall, one was 74 yards, and another from running back Montrailius Mosley.
Offensively, the Tigers struggled to get things going but had some minor success running the ball in the first 30 minutes of play. Running back
David Richardson racked up 51 yards on nine carries in the half as he,
Emmanuel Johnson and
Kendon Young each busted runs of either 15 or 16 yards in the half.
The Tigers couldn't sustain anything on the offensive side of the ball however as they went 0-for-5 on third downs and only managed to pass for 31 yards in the half.
Talaileva Sufia got the start at quarterback and struggled to attack down the field as he went 4-for-8 in the half for only 31 yards, an interception, and was sacked twice.
It was more of the same to start the second half for Reinhardt as they came out with the opening possession of the third quarter and scored on another drive over 80 yards capped off by a 17-yard touchdown rush by Mosley to make it a 28-0 lead for the Eagles.
Campbellsville's offense continued to struggle through the second half and discipline was a big issue for the Tigers as they committed 12 total penalties for 110 yards. Sufia only completed three more passes for 16 yards in the second half and the rushing attack couldn't continue their first half success.
RU used their ability to move the ball via the run game to ekeep the clock moving during the second half with their four touchdown lead. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles ate up almost nine minutes of the game clock to give Campbellsville limited opportunities to try and come back late in the game.
The Tigers will regroup and head onto the road for next week as they will take on the Bulldogs of Union College in Barbourville, Ky. at 7 p.m. ET.
