Mahoney fires 69 to lead, Tigers sit in first after opening round of NCCAA Mid-East Regional

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Junior Austin Mahoney was the lone Tiger to not record a bogey in the opening round of the NCCAA Mid-East Regional and leads the field with a three-under 69.

Mahoney, coming off a tied for second finish last week in the Lindsey Wilson College Fall Kick Off, birdied Nos. 1, 14 and 15. He played the par 3s at one under, par fours at one under and carded 15 pars in the opening round.

As a team, the Tigers lead the field by 24 strokes over Alice Lloyd College. CU shot even par as a team at 288 while Alice Lloyd shot a 312 overall. Oakland City University is third (317), Kentucky Christian is fourth (331) and Campbellsville-Harrodsburg is fifth (332).

Sophomore Landon Connor sits in a tie for second place after firing a two-under 70. The 70 is the second-lowest round in his career (66 at LWC last season). He is tied with Alice Lloyd's Reece Ison. Connor fell victim to bogeys on the first and third holes but birdied Nos. 5, 7, 9, and 14.

Jonathan Brewington is tied for sixth place overall after a two-over 74. Brewington had a pair of red numbers as well but dropped four strokes to bogeys. Justin Warman sits in eighth place after an opening-round 75 and Layton Hord shot a 78 to tie in a tie for 10thplace.

All five Tigers are in the Top 10 individually.

The second round of the NCCAA Mid-East Regional is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. ET. The winner of the tournament will gain an automatic bid to the NCCAA Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in late October.
