Connor rallies in final round to win, Tigers qualify for NCCAA Championship with regional title

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Sophomore Landon Connor out-shot teammate Austin Mahoney in the final round to win his first-career tournament by three strokes at the NCCAA Mid-East Regional.

Connor helped lead the Tigers to a 50-stroke win over Alice Lloyd College by shooting 288-290 in the two-day tournament. Alice Lloyd finished with 312-316.

With the win, the Tigers qualify for the NCCAA National Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in late October.

Connor, playing as the No. 2 golfer for the Tigers this week, turned the tides on his teammate Mahoney with a bogey-free round. Conner had 16 pars and pulled out a pair of birdies on the par-four 12^thand 13^thholes to shoot a final score 70 on Tuesday.

Mahoney, who was bogey free in the first round, fell victim to back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 to fall off the pace. He carded three birdies on the front nine holes before two the two doubles and another two bogeys to shoot a three-over 75. He finished solo third.

Jonathan Brewington finished two shots better than Monday's first round with an even-par 72. Brewington had four bogeys but rallied with four birdies as well to finish solo fifth.

Justin Warman improved by two strokes as well in his second round by shooting 75-73 to finish in sixth and Layton Hord rounded out the Top 5 for CU in eighth place with scores of 78-76.

The Tigers had three golfers in the Top 5, while Reece Ison from Alice Lloyd finished runner-up by three strokes and Nick Virden from Oakland City University placed fourth with a 73-72 in the two rounds.

Next up for Campbellsville is the Georgetown College Invitational at Cherry Blossom GC on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
