PULASKI, Tenn. – After dropping their first match of the season, the Lady Tigers had put together a six-game win streak, as they entered Saturday's match facing the sixth ranked Martin Methodist Red Hawks.
The stage was not too big for the Lady Tigers, however, as they relied on a pair of 81
stminute goals from
Molly Hall to takedown the Red Hawks 3-2.
In a match-up between two high powered offenses, as both teams rank in the top 20 in goals per game, the defensive efforts seemed to be the story for much Saturday night's match.
The game was quiet for both squads for much of the first half as the Lady Tigers and Red Hawks were only able to put together nine shots through the first 45 minutes of play.
Nonetheless, in those limited opportunities, Campbellsville was able to capitalize as
Lakin Walls used a dish from
Rachel McWilliams in the 24
thminute to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.
This lead was safe until halftime, but coming out of the break, both teams were ready to ramp up their offensive opportunities.
Throughout the first seven minutes of play in the second half the teams had already totaled five shots, including a 52
ndminute goal by Natsuna Sugishita, tying the game at one.
In a quick spurt of momentous opportunities, the MMC offensive again quickly attacked as three minutes later, Sugishita was able to set up a goal by Yuki Watari allowing MMC to take a 2-1 lead.
Following the 55
thminute goal, the shots slowed for both club.
That is until
Molly Hall exploded in the 81
stminute with two goals in nine seconds of play. The first of which was placed in off of a rebound as Hall recovered her own attempt that was saved by the Martin Methodist keeper. Hall was then able to rapidly take the ball back for CU and place another in the back of the frame, putting the Lady Tigers up 3-2.
These opportunities were enough to maintain the Lady Tigers throughout the final nine minutes, giving Campbellsville the upset and their seventh straight victory.
The Lady Tigers will now begin Mid-South Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 2
ndas they will travel to Pikeville for an afternoon tilt beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
