Parrott and Coffey sit in first to start careers; Lady Tigers are in second by three strokes

PINEVILLE, Ky. — Who said freshmen couldn't make early impacts in their career? Well, don't tell rookies Gracie Parrott and Abigail Coffey that because both fired two-over 74s in the opening round of the Bill Sergent Invitational to be tied for first place.

In their first college tournament of their careers, the duo combined for five birdies and lead the 2019 Mid-South Conference champion Carlee Shoemaker from University of the Cumberlands by one stroke (75).

In addition, all four counting scores for Campbellsville were all in the Top 10 after Day 1 and all five Lady Tigers are in the Top 12. As a team, the Lady Tigers (308) are three shots out of the lead from the reigning MSC champions and host program, University of the Cumberlands (305).

Starting on the 10thhole, Parrott bogeys Nos. 12-13 but claimed a birdie on the par-five 14th. She dropped a shot on the par-three 17thto go out at two-over par (38).

On the front nine, her last nine holes, Parrott played it at even par. She traded a birdie with a bogey on the par-three sixth (2) and the par-five seventh (6).

Coffey fell victim to only one bogey on the day but had two double bogeys on her card. Starting on the 12th, Coffey went par-par-bogey to start her first three holes and birdied the par-five second hole – which was her ninth – to go out at even par.

On her final nine holes (3-11), Coffey dropped two shots on the par-five seventh but gained one right back with a birdie on the par-three eighth. On her final two holes, Coffey slipped but caught herself again with a double bogey on the par-four 10thbut came back to birdie the par-four 11th

Sophomore Madison Ferrie finished with a seven-over 79. Ferrie started on hole No. 11 and struggled out of the gates before rolling in a birdie on the par-three 13th. Ferrie fell victim to three bogeys and three doubles before carding three birdies in her round to finish with a 79 and in 10thplace.

April Houk is two shots behind Ferrie with a nine-over 81 and sits in 11thplace. Houk was the lone Lady Tiger not to card a birdie in her round, falling victim to seven bogeys and a double.

Briley Carter finished with a 12-over 84 and sits 12thplace.

It's a two-team race for title honors as Cumberlands and Campbellsville lead Midway University by over 20 strokes (330), Union College by forty strokes (348) and Thomas More University by 68 strokes (376).

The second round of the Bill Sergent Invitational is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. local time at Wasiato Winds. Parrott starts on the first hole, Ferrie tees off on No. 2, Coffey on No. 3, Houk on No. 4 and Carter on hole No. 5.
