CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville women's basketball team suffered their first defeat of the season Saturday afternoon at the Powell Athletic Center as Shawnee State University earned a 79-64 win over the Lady Tigers.
CU trailed the entirety of the game as the Bears jumped out to a 9-2 lead within the three minutes of the game as the closest the Lady Tigers came to regaining the lead was a one-point game three times, twice in the third quarter at 49-48 and 52-51 then again in the fourth at 57-56.
The third quarter was the quarter for the Lady Tigers on the comeback trail as they outscored the Bears 23-13 in the period but were never able to break through to even tie the game as Shawnee State kept padding their lead the closer CU got.
CU just couldn't continue their strong offensive stretch into the fourth quarter as the Bears pulled away about halfway through the period to extend their lead to 11 points after back-to-back three-pointers to make it 69-58. SSU wouldn't look back as they closed out the game out but only allowing five CU points over the last 2:35 of the game.
Campbellsville got double figure outputs from
Caitlin Hall (17),
Madison Faulkner (17), and
Courtney Pritchett (16) but the rest of the Lady Tigers struggled from the field as the rest of the team combined to shoot 21.7 percent from the field.
The Bears were dominant on the glass on Saturday, outrebounding CU 45-27 as SSU also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points. Brandie Snow led the Bears in rebounding with 14 boards while adding 15 points.
Anyia Pride and Sydney King led the way in scoring for SSU as Pride finished with a game-high 18 as King added 16. King was big on the offensive glass for the Bears as she grabbed six offensive rebounds for Shawnee State in the game.
Turnovers were a big part of the story for the first half but it was surprisingly in favor of the Bears when the Lady Tigers had been so good at turning their opponents over throughout the season. Campbellsville turned it over 13 times in the opening 20 minutes that led to 19 SSU points while CU only scored three points off of 11 Bears' turnovers.
Faulkner had a strong first quarter for CU with 10 points but fouls kept her on the bench in the second quarter as she ended the first half still with 10 points.
Shawnee State really took away the outside shot for the Lady Tigers in the first half as CU only put up five three-point attempts, knocking down two as both
Lexy Lake and Hall hit from the perimeter.
Shawnee State's offensive success came down low as Pride scored 12 points in the first half as she was able to get open on the block on a number of occasions after the Bears broke the CU press.
The first half foul situation hurt the Lady Tigers as both teams committed 11 fouls in the half but eight of the fouls came from four different CU players as Faulkner, Hall, Pritchett, and
Savannah Gregory all finished the half with two fouls apiece.
Campbellsville women's basketball will play again at home next Thursday when they host University of the Cumberlands at the Powell Athletic Center at 6 p.m. ET.
