Women's Basketball CU Athletics

Lady Tigers host University of the Cumberlands for 110th meeting between Kentucky rivals

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – For the first time this season, the Campbellsville University women's basketball will have to do something they haven't done since Dec. 19, 2018 and that's prepare for a game after suffering a defeat as CU welcomes University of the Cumberlands to the Powell Athletic Center at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday night.

Matt Payton, the voice of Lady Tiger and Tiger basketball, will be on the call on WLCU-TV and FM along with Benji Kelly as the pair will be courtside at the Powell Athletic Center on the CU Sports Network on 88.7 The Tiger and Comcast Channel 10 locally in Campbellsville along with online at www.campbellsvilletigers.com/watch.

That defeat came against No. 7 Shawnee State University last Saturday by a final score of 79-64 for the Lady Tigers' first loss to a Mid-South Conference opponent since the 2018 MSC Tournament Championship against Shawnee State.

That was a stretch of 21-straight games against conference opponents after going 14-0 during the 2018-19 regular season conference games, 3-0 in the conference tournament, and 4-0 to start the 2019-20 conference schedule.

SERIES FACTS
  • The Patriots are the team that the Lady Tigers have faced off with the most in program history with a current record of 73-36 all-time in favor of Campbellsville.
  • Head Coach Ginger High Colvin is 20-11 against Cumberlands as CU is on a current five-game winning streak against the Patriots with the two teams meeting three times last season, twice in the regular season and again in the first round of the conference tournament.
  • The longest winning streak for either team in the series came during the transition from the Donna Wise era to the Ginger High Colvin era as University of the Cumberlands won eight-straight meetings from February 2005 to February 2008.
  • From that point on, Campbellsville has won at least one game against the Patriots in all but one season including going 10-1 in the Powell Athletic Center against Cumberlands since the start of the 2008-09 season.
  • During the time Coach Colvin has been leading the Lady Tigers, Campbellsville and Cumberlands have met seven times in the Mid-South Conference tournament with the Patriots holding a slim 4-3 advantage during that stretch.

SCOUTING CUMBERLANDS
  • The Patriots have vastly improved from their 14-17 overall and 1-13 conference record from last season to already have more overall wins this season at a 15-2 record while sitting at 3-1 in conference play.
  • The two losses for Cumberlands have both come by only a single point and both have come in overtime games as they lost 97-96 to Asbury in overtime and 79-78 to Georgetown in double overtime.
  • Individually, new additions to the Patriots roster have played a big part in their turnaround this season, led by the Covane twins, Carla and Vilma, who are both 6-3 centers that are averaging double figure points and over seven rebounds per game.

TIGER CLAWZ
  • CU point guard, Caitlin Hall is coming off of two of her better scoring games of her career, tying her career-high 18 points against Pikeville (Jan. 9), then following it up with a 17-point game against Shawnee State.
  • Sammy Rogers has been a quality secondary scoring option off the bench for the Lady Tigers as she's averaging 9.4 points per game this season, fourth-highest average on the team as she's been able to use her 6-0 frame to score down low along with occasional three-pointers and an 80.8-percent mark from the free throw line.
  • Campbellsville is the No. 1 assisting team in NAIA Division I with a team total of 363 so far behind starting Hall's 108 assists, good for No. 3 individually in that category.
  • Forcing turnovers has been a big part of the CU game plan through the early portion of the schedule as they force their opponents into 26.4 turnovers per game and rank first in NAIA DI in total steals at 288 this season.
  • The three-point shot has been a big benefit for the Lady Tiger offense as they rank No. 2 in the NAIA in team three-point percentage at 39.5 percent behind one of the best three-point shooters in NAIA DI as Lexy Lake ranks No. 1 in total threes made (67), No. 3 in threes made per game (3.7), and No. 8 in three-point percentage (46.9%).

INDIVIDUAL MILESTONES WATCH
  • Upper classmen in the CU starting lineup have been and will be climbing the all-time leader boards in the history of Lady Tiger basketball.
  • Starting with Madison Faulkner joining the 1,000-point club, she now sits at 28th on the all-time scoring list and will likely have a teammate join her on that list as Savannah Gregory currently sits at 986 career points.
  • Gregory is also in the top-five on the career steals list as she is currently at 280, recently passing Mackenzie Lee for fourth all-time.
  • Senior Caitlin Hall currently has 529 career assists, recently becoming the sixth player to reach 500 assists in program history.

1,000-WIN PLATEAU
  • In the 45th season of Lady Tiger basketball history, Campbellsville reached a milestone that had only been accomplished twice before in the history of NAIA women's basketball, win 1,000 games as a program.
  • The monumental win came in the Lady Tigers 91-59 win over Martin Methodist College last Saturday in Pulaski, Tenn. as part of the MSC/SSAC Crossover.
  • Campbellsville joins Wayland Baptist and Union University (Tenn.) as the only other programs to reach the feat as Union is no longer part of the NAIA after moving to the NCAA Division II level.

UP NEXT FOR CU
  • The Lady Tigers will only play the one game against Cumberlands this week with a rare Saturday off during conference play before getting back to Thursday/Saturday action next week.
  • They will host Georgetown College next Thursday at the Powell Athletic Center at 6 p.m. ET followed by the first Mid-South Conference meeting between the newly added Thomas More University and Campbellsville on Saturday in Crestview Hills, Ky. at 2 p.m. ET.
