Georgetown finishes game on 8-0 run to squander Campbellsville’s upset

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. –Campbellsville men's basketball gave No.1 Georgetown all it wanted but couldn't capitalize down the stretch falling, 66-58.

Campbellsville (13-8, 3-4 MSC) held Georgetown to its lowest point total all season overall and also in the first half. But the Tigers in Orange and Black finished tonight on an 8-0 run to pull away for the victory.

After hitting only 1-of-13 from beyond the 3-point line in the first half, Campbellsville tremendously better in the second half as it made six triples and were able to keep itself in the game the entire night.

Georgetown started on a 14-3 run, which forced head coach Brent Vernon to call a timeout. The Campbellsville defense then stiffened up and held GC to only 10 points the last 17 minutes of the first half. Georgetown finished shooting 2-of-16 from the field including 1-of-7 behind the arc. CU held star Chris Coffey in check to only one point as he picked up his second foul with 11:30 remaining in the first half and sat the rest of the way on the bench.

After trailing 24-23 at halftime – both lowest point totals in each first half this season - Campbellsville took its first lead of the game on a triple from Alston Davis, 26-24, and it was the first of three timely triples from the junior forward all in the second half.

Back and forth was the story of the second half as there were eight lead changes, as no lead got over five points for either team until there was less than a minute remaining.

With 2:09 remaining, Richie Mitchell brought the Powell Athletic Center to its feet with his third 3-pointer and tied the game at 58-all. But then it was the 8-0 Georgetown run to close it. Jake Ohmer found Kyran Jones underneath to the opponent ahead, 60-58, then it was two free throws by Chris Coffey at the 1:15 mark giving GC a four-point advantage.

That was how Georgetown ended it – free throws. Ohmer and Jones both sank two free throws each in the final 49 seconds to close it. Ohmer was the majority of the offense for Georgetown tonight, scoring 27 points and hitting five 3-point baskets. Jones finished with 14 points.

Taiveyhon Mason led the way for CU with 15 points and eight rebounds. Mitchell was the other CU Tiger in double figures as he pitched in 13 points.

Campbellsville will be back in action this Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. ET, as it will travel to Crestview Hills, Ky. to take on the Thomas More Saints.
