CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University women's basketball team dominated from wire to wire Thursday night in their 99-49 win over Georgetown College at the Powell Athletic Center.
The Lady Tigers came out of the gates on fire to start with a 7-0 lead that extended out to 20-2 and eventually climbed to 32-5 to end the first quarter. The start of the game was highlighted by junior guard
Savannah Gregory's first two baskets pushing her over the 1,000-point mark in her career.
Gregory hit a three-pointer to open the scoring then, in true fashion for Gregory, got a steal on the defensive end that lead to a layup on the other end to make her the 38
th player in women's basketball history at CU to reach the milestone.
Accomplishing the feat as a junior, Gregory becomes the first junior to reach 1,000 points since Mackenzie Lee (2009-13) did the same as well. Lee finished her career with 1,462 career points and currently sits at 16
th on the Lady Tiger basketball all-time scoring list.
Gregory finished with a career-high 26 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the field while adding five rebounds, three blocked shots, and two steals to her night. The Scottsville, Ky. native only missed three shots all night on the two shots from the field and one shot from the free throw line as she went 4-of-5 from the charity stripe and 2-for-2 from deep.
The first quarter was all about the turnovers from Georgetown as they coughed the ball up 12 times in the period that led to 19 of CU's 32 points in the opening 10 minutes of play. Georgetown finished with their season high in turnovers in the game as they gave up the basketball 34 times, leading to over half of the points for Campbellsville.
The second quarter started similarly to the first as Gregory notched the first five points of the period again to climb their lead to 32 points, which was their largest lead of the half twice at 37-5 and 43-11. CU's largest lead of the game was 55 points in the fourth quarter when they led 95-40 with 3:24 remaining in the game.
Sammy Rogers came off the bench and was efficient for LTB, scoring 10 points in 10 minutes on 4-of-5 shooting while hitting a three-pointer. Bench production was strong for the Lady Tigers in the game with the reserves putting up 52 of the 99 points led by 11 from both
Madison Sheppard and
Shyla Calbert. All but one Lady Tigers on the roster scored and hit a shot from the field in the game.
Defensively, CU was as strong as ever holding Georgetown to 17-47 (36%) shooting from the field and 4-for-15 (27%) from three-point range along with Campbellsville's 25 steals on the 34 turnovers GC turnovers.
Campbellsville also needed to pick up their rebounding efforts after allowing back-to-back season highs for an opponent in 45 rebounds to both Shawnee State and Cumberlands. CU did just that by outrebounding Georgetown by 10 in the game at 42-32 led by seven apiece from both
Ashlee McGeorge and
Lashaya Carman.
Next up for the Lady Tigers will be their first road game in the Mid-South Conference since Jan. 4 when they head to Crestview Hills, Ky. for their first meeting in conference play with Thomas More University.
