CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Looking to extend their winning streak to four games, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team earned their first win in the Mid-South Conference with an 81-59 victory over Cumberland University on Saturday evening.
After holding a 34-30 lead at the end of the first half, the Tigers outscored the Phoenix 47-29 in the second half. Guards
Taiveyhon Mason and
Richie Mitchell led the way for Campbellsville with 19 and 18 points respectively as they both put up double digits in the second half.
Mitchell scored 12 of his 18 from three-point range as he three of his four triples while the Tigers were pulling away during the second half. Mason shot 9-for-16 from the field hitting his lone three late in the second half to secure their double-digit lead and help push his second half point total to 17.
Campbellsville had four players in double figures including Mason and Mitchell as
Ronald Taylor added 15 and
Justin Tucker scored 13 as both Taylor and Tucker grabbed five rebounds apiece.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as there were five lead changes during the half that were the only lead changes during the game. The score was tied four times with there only being one tie during the second half and three in the first half.
The Phoenix were led by the game's leading scorer Jalen Duke as he finished with 20 points and seven rebounds to lead all players in that category as well. Aside from Duke, only one other Cumberland player scored in double figures as Aaron Ridley scored 18 and their next highest scorer only had eight points.
The Tigers were strong from distance going 10-for-26 (38.5%) as
Jacob King had a solid game going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Behind Mitchell's four and King's three from downtown, Campbellsville also had three point baskets from Mason, Taylor, and
Alston Davis.
Campbellsville men's basketball will get back on the court next Monday when they travel to Marietta, Ga. for a road game inside the Mid-South Conference against Life University at 8 p.m. ET.
