Box Score 2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A long day that started early for the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team finished with a loss against Bethel (Ind.) and a win against Mid-America Christian in St. Paul, Minn. on Thursday.
The win over the Evangels of MACU came in the Lady Tigers' second match of the day as they were able to pull off a four-set victory by scores of 25-23, 16-25, 25-17, and 26-24 as they were able to bounce back from an early loss.
It was all about offensive opportunities for CU as they were less efficient on the attack but they had 47 more attacks than MACU in the match that led to Campbellsville finishing with 12 more kills. The Lady Tigers tallied 54 kills on 207 attacks (.092) while the Evangels finished with 42 kills on 160 attacks (.150).
Outside hitter
Sutton Mason, middle blocker
Taylor Weirich, and setter
Paige Merrick all finished with the team lead in kills as all three finished the match with 10. Merrick finished with a triple-double as she had 36 assists and 18 digs in the match for one of her better all-around performances in her third year at CU.
With MACU only committing 18 attack errors and CU registering only six blocks in the match, the back row played a big part in the Lady Tigers' success, recording 88 total digs. Libero
Katie Morin finished with a match-high 29 digs with
Sophie Ball just ahead of Merrick's 18 at 19 in the match for the sophomore outside hitter.
Weirich's 10 kills is a career-high in her second year at Campbellsville as she had never recorded a match with more than five kills. Weirich and fellow middle blocker
Stela Velinova finished with a combined 19 kills as Velinova finished with nine kills herself while leading the team with four blocks in the match.
In the first match of the day, the Lady Tigers were swept by Bethel University (Ind.) by scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-21. It was a struggle on the attack with no CU player finishing with double-digit kills as Ball led the team with nine in the match.
Some of the trends may have led to slight adjustments for the second match against MACU as Merrick had some success attacking from her setting position with four kills and Ball's nine kills and five digs may have given her more play in full rotation against MACU.
The Pilots did not have a go-to attacking force as no player finished with more than six kills, but five different Bethel players finished with either five or six kills with Maddy Payne and Cheyanne Seymour being the two Pilots with six kills.
The Lady Tigers will get day two matches started off as well with an 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT match against Erskine College. A win for the Lady Tigers will likely clinch a spot in the semi-finals of the NCCAA Championship.
