CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The odd setting of an empty Powell Athletic Center set the stage for the 2020-21 season opener for the Campbellsville University men's basketball team as they earned an 84-72 win over Kentucky Christian University.
CU had a very balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures led by 19 points from
Taiveyhon Mason. The senior point guard also added five assists, five rebounds, and two steals as he scored eight in the first half and 11 in the second half.
The Tigers also got 15 from
Sam Weining, 13 from
Brayden Sebastian, 12 from
Jay'von Jackson, and 10 from
Taj Price. Weining led the team in rebounds as well with eight as he played a game-high 37 minutes for Campbellsville.
Sebastian's 13 points came in his first career game and start as the freshman out of Lancaster, Ky. played 25 minutes in his debut while adding four rebounds and three assists. Jackson added sharp shooting from outside as all four of his baskets from the field came from behind the three-point arc for his 12 points on the 4-of-7 shooting from deep.
The Knights and Tigers traded blows in the first half with nine different lead changes but after the 5:10 mark of the first half, CU never trailed. After going into the halftime break leading 45-41, Campbellsville started the second half on a 18-6 run to pull their lead to go up 65-47.
An 18-point lead was the largest at any point of the game for the Tigers as they were able to cruise to the final buzzer. KCU's Kurt Hall led all scorer with 30 points in the game as his effort kept the Knights within striking range throughout the game shooting 11-for-17 from the field.
Campbellsville will be hosting the Lou Cunningham Classic this Friday and Saturday as they will face off against Simmons College of Kentucky and Union College at the Powell Athletic Center.
