Cool shooting afternoon ends in first loss for the Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A cool shooting afternoon handed Campbellsville University men's basketball its first loss of the season as Union College defeated the Tigers, 71-61, in the finale of the Lou Cunningham Classic.

The Tigers (2-1) were led in scoring by Taiveyhon Mason's 22 points, but the senior guard was 8-of-22 from the floor overall with four rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes of play.

Jacob King, who also played 37 minutes, finished with 14 points and four rebounds.

The Tigers led 27-23 at halftime in a give-and-take opening half but Union shot 44 percent overall an 91 percent from the free throw line to outscore Campbellsville, 48-34 in the second 20 minutes of action.

Union (1-1) was led by sophomore Markelle Turner's 24 points and four 3-pointers – which all came in the second half along with 18 of his 24 points.

After a King 3-pointer with 11:23 left in the game and CU leading, 47-45, the Tigers went ice cold. Union scored eight-straight, but Mason hit a runner in the lane at the seven-minute mark – which completed a 3+ minute drought for CU.

Union's lead blossomed to 11 points, 63-52, after a Turner triple with 3:16 left and Campbellsville never was able to work the lead lower than seven the rest of the night.

Campbellsville finishes the Lou Cunningham Classic with a 1-1 record after beating Simmons College on Friday night, 77-48. The Tigers get back in action on Friday, Nov. 13 at Indiana University Southeast. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET as Matt Payton will have the call on the CU Sports Network.
