CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In a game that was tied at 66-66 with 1:54 remaining in the second half, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team was able to score four unanswered points to take and hold on to a 70-66 lead to win over Cumberland University Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers held strong defensively forcing a turnover and two missed three-point attempts in the final 1:12 of the game as the deciding basket was scored on an alley-oop layup from
Taiveyhon Mason to
Sam Weining with 1:05 left to make a 68-66 Campbellsville lead.
Guard
Max Reyes was able to push it to the four-point lead with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the game for the Tigers after making it a two-possession game.
Reyes and Mason both scored in double figures as Mason shined with game highs in points (25) and assists (8) while adding four rebounds and four steals on the night with Reyes the second leading scorer for Campbellsville, adding 14 points off the bench, 11 coming in the second half while adding five rebounds himself and going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
The only other Tiger in double figures was
Alston Davis as he finished with 10 points in 21 minutes as he was unable to play the final 9:20 of the second half after suffering an injury the knocked him out of the rest of the game.
Though the score was tight at the end of the game, the Tigers were in control throughout a majority of the first 26 minutes of the game as they held a lead as big as 13 with about six minutes left in the first half and didn't relinquish that lead until the 13:12 mark in the second half.
From that point until the 4:46 mark of the second half, Cumberland led before the teams traded blows coming down the stretch leading to Campbellsville pulling out the win.
The Phoenix were able to produce four scorers in double figures, led by 17 from Tavon King as Aaron Ridley (16), Isaac Stephens (14), and Tyler Byrd (10) played well in supporting efforts. Stephens added a game-high 12 rebounds as Cumberland was able to outrebound Campbellsville 39-35 including 11 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second chance points.
Up next for the Tigers will be a road matchup against Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. CT in Columbia, Ky. as Campbellsville will look for three-straight Mid-South Conference wins.
