Shanae Netherland Thompson, Benji Kelly and Mark Johnson are inducted into CU Athletics Hall of Fame

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Three new members of the Campbellsville University Athletics Hall of Fame were inducted in a ceremony on February 15^th in the Powell Athletic Center.

Former Lady Tiger swimmer Shanae Netherland Thompson and former Tiger Basketball player Benji Kelly were introduced as new Hall of Fame members along with Mark Johnson, a donor with meritorious service.

Thompson becomes the first member of the Campbellsville University swimming program to be inducted into the Campbellsville University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Under the leadership of coaches Steve Bedingfiled and Dean Brownley, Thompson was a member of the inaugural women's team for Campbellsville University in 1990, joining two other females.

During the last two years of her career, Thompson became the only female on the swim team but didn't let that keep her from greatness. She competed in every individual event and held records for each one. Thompson specialized in the distance freestyle (500 yards and 1600 yards) and butterfly (100 yards and 200 yards) events. Thompson qualified for the NAIA National Swimming Championships in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and in 1993, was the very first CU swimmer to earn All American honors.

Thompson graduated from Campbellsville University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. She began her teaching career at North Hardin High School in Radcliff, Ky. in the fall of 1994, where she is still employed as a math teacher.

Kelly, becomes the sixth member of Campbellsville University basketball to be inducted into the Campbellsville University Hall of Fame.

Kelly, the vice president for development at Campbellsville University, made his mark on the basketball court while playing under Hall of Famer Lou Cunningham. He finished his career second in scoring with 2,121 points and averaged 17.1 points per game. Kelly also became the first Tiger to ever surpass the 2,000-point barrier.

Upon his induction, Kelly is ninth in rebounds with 663 and remains in the Top 4 of two other stat categories. He's fourth in single-season points with 724 in 1992-93 and third in all-time steals with 180.

As Vice President for Development, Kelly is responsible for the staffs of alumni relations, planned giving, foundation relations, donor relations, major gifts and the Big Maroon Club, all under the Office of Development umbrella.

Kelly has been instrumental with multiple capital campaigns and projects including: E. Bruce Heilman Complex, Betty Dobbins Heilman Student Wellness Center, Athletic Fieldhouse, Ransdell Chapel, and School of Education.

Johnson becomes the fifth inductee into the Campbellsville University Athletics Hall of Fame under the distinction of Meritorious Service.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and later earning a degree from the Graduate School of Banking of the South from Louisiana State University (LSU), Mr. Johnson is not only a major donor for Campbellsville University but also an outstanding community member. Upon his induction, Mr. Johnson is in his 26th year as President and CEO of Citizens Bank & Trust Company of Campbellsville, Ky.

Mr. Johnson has been involved in the growth and expansion of Campbellsville University since moving to Campbellsville in 1990. He currently chairs the Campbellsville-Taylor County (CTC) Economic Development Authority and the CTC Industrial Foundation, Inc. He currently serves as the Managing Trustee of the William H. Olson Scholarship Trust and was honored with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2009. He is an active member of Omicron Delta Kappa and serves on its Finance Committee. Mr. Johnson is an active member of the Campbellsville Christian Church.

He is a strong supporter of Campbellsville University Athletics where he and his family have been faithful donors to a number of Campbellsville University Projects and programs, proudly involved with the installation of turf and lighting at the football and baseball fields and capital improvements to both the swimming and volleyball programs. In addition to athletics, Mr. Johnson has financially supported the Hawkins Athletic Center, Ransdell Chapel, Citizens Bank Writing Center, and the Art Building for Environmental Studies.

Mr. Johnson continues to provide invaluable support to numerous internships and athletic programs to enrich the experience of student athletes.
