No. 13 Lady Tigers split a pair of 4-3 decisions to No. 7 Mobile and No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A pair of 4-3 decisions were split on the opening day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic as No. 13 Campbellsville lost to No. 7 University of Mobile and won over No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett.

Game one went nine innings and almost three hours as the Lady Tigers trailed early, 3-0, but rallied back in the bottom of the seventh to tie it. Mobile won in the top of the ninth.

In game two, it was Campbellsville leading 3-0 early and Georgia Gwinnett rallied in the fourth and fifth innings before CU won in the seventh.

Game one: Mobile 4, Campbellsville 3

Aleigha Talsma (2-1) went the distance in game one and allowed a three-spot for the Rams in the first inning before she ended up sitting down 12-straight at one point from the second through fifth innings.

Campbellsville got its first run from a solo homer by Ryley Whitney – the first of the year for her. The Lady Tigers rallied in the seventh against the Rams after Sam McKee and Talsma both singled and Dana Adkins moved them with a sac bunt. That setup a Blades infield single to load the bases and Lexi Miller drove in the second CU run with a single to right.

Down 3-2 with the bases load, Whitney showed discipline at the plate with a walk to score the tying run.

With the international tie breaker rule in effect and putting runners on second base to start innings, both pitchers, Talsma and Jenna James, worked out of jams. Both teams had runners on second and third with one out but neither could score.

In the ninth, it was an RBI double by Courtney Ellzey to end up being the game-winner.

The Lady Tigers had a runner on first and third with one out in the ninth and a pair of strikeouts ended it.

Talsma went nine innings and gave up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out three.

Lexi Miller picked up her fifth multi-hit game to lead CU at the plate, while Whitney had two RBI – a solo home run and bases loaded walk.

Game two: Campbellsville 4, Georgia Gwinnett 3

A quick turnaround just 20 minutes after falling to Mobile, the Lady Tigers had to face No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett. Courtney Patterson was solid in the circle tossing five innings and allowing only one earned run but CU's defense let her down to tie the game in the bottom fourth.

Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead in the second after Hannah Judd reached on an error and McKee walked to put runners on first and second with one out. That setup a Madison Davis RBI bloop single to left and Adkins followed with a sac fly to put CU up.

In the third, Miller doubled to lead off the frame and Humphrey homered but was credited with a triple and RBI after not touching home plate after the home run.

Leading 3-0, GGC answered with two runs in the third and another in the fourth with only one of them being earned after an error on the defense.

Chadwell (1-0) entered in the sixth inning and sat down the Grizzlies only allowing two base runners.

Offensively, Blades and Davis both had a pair of hits to lead CU while Miller, Humphrey, Whitney, McKee and Adkins all tallied one hit.
