Offense explodes in game two as Lady Tigers split Saturday doubleheader in Georgia

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A tale of two games for No. 13 Campbellsville ended with another doubleheader sweep at the NFCA Leadoff Classic as the Lady Tigers lost 4-3 to Warner University and won 9-1 over the University of Rio Grande.

Payton Blades (3-1) was solid in the circle in the morning game vs. Warner but was the tough luck loser allowing only one earned run of the four that scored. The Royals walked off in the bottom of the seventh to upset CU.

Offensively, the Lady Tigers were led by Hannah Judd's two hits while Lexi Miller delivered her first home run of the season. Payton Blades also had an RBI for CU.

In game two, Courtney Patterson (2-2) tossed five innings of three hit softball allowing only one earned run and striking out three. She was relieved by Katy Chadwell tossing an inning.

CU exploded for 17 hits against Rio Grande and run-ruled the RedStorm in six innings. Miller and Tori Humphrey both had three hits, while Humphrey delivered four RBI. Blades, Ryley Whitney, Sam McKee and Dana Adkins all had two hits each to lead CU.

Game one: Warner 4, Campbellsville 3

The Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and led 3-0 after the top of the third. Miller's homer – the first of the season – put CU up 1-0 then Judd delivered an infield single to put CU ahead, 2-0.

In the third, it was Blades delivering her first home run extending the Lady Tiger lead, 3-0.

Warner got on the board in the bottom of the third after a pair of errors turned into two unearned runs.

The Royals brought in Tiffany Dodson the final four innings and she shutdown the Lady Tigers earning her fourth win of the year. Dodson tossed four innings and allowed only three hits while striking out nine of the 15 batters she faced.

In the seventh, Blades allowed a leadoff double to Sara Bruno before Ashton Owen scored her with a single up the middle to walk off.

Game two: Campbellsville 9, Rio Grande 1

Fighting wind gusts up to 25mph in the second game, the Lady Tigers finally broke through in the third against the RedStorm. Senior Dana Adkins started rallies in the third and fifth innings from the nine-hole in the order.

CU played small both throughout to manufacture runs. Adkins singles and moved to second on a Blades sac bunt before Humphrey and Whitney delivered run-scoring singles.

In the fifth, Adkins doubled down the line to left field and that started a span of four straight hits, including RBI singles by Miller and Humphrey.

In the sixth, Patterson got in trouble and gave way to Katy Chadwell in the circle to close it out allowing only one Rio Grande run.

The Lady Tigers got that run back, plus some more, with a big bottom half of the sixth. Adkins once against started the rally from the bottom of the order to reach on a walk and that followed with five straight base hits. Miller, Humphrey, Whitney and Judd all earned RBI in the inning to force the run rule.
