CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – As CU opened Mid-South Conference play, the Tigers were able top the Phoenix of Cumberland University in three sets behind a game high 16 kills from
Rafael Cruz.
Entering MSC play undefeated, the Tigers (12-0) visited Lebanon, Tenn. seeking to record their first win in the Mid-South Conference over Cumberland University (5-9).
The Tigers picked up their fourth consecutive 3-0 sweep with straight set wins, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17.
Through three sets, the Tigers once again were able to hit for over .300 behind double digit kills from
Rafael Cruz and
Joudiel Poveymirow. Cruz led the way for CU, hitting for a season-best 16 kills on just 28 attacks. Poveymirow followed with 10 of his own.
Tyler Vermilion also played an important role in the Tigers 3-0 win as he was able to hit .500 with a season high seven kills in just his second appearance of the season for CU.
As has been the story for much of the season for the Tigers,
John Montalvo and Poveymirow led the backline tallying 13 and seven digs, nearly record half of the team's 41 digs on the night.
Overall, the Tigers were able to total 46 kills on 99 attacks to hit for .313. Campbellsville did this, will limiting the Phoenix to 21-81 with just a hitting percentage of .086.
With the win, the Tigers jump out in front in the MSC standings before returning to conference play on February 11.
Campbellsville will now travel out to the Carolinas for a three-match weekend beginning with meeting with Belmont Abbey College on Feb. 6
th at 7 p.m. ET.
