Lady Tigers head to Portsmouth for rematch with No. 7 Shawnee State

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – There has been only one blemish on the 23-1 record for the Campbellsville University women's basketball team and Thursday night they will get a chance repay that loss as they face Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio at 6 p.m. ET.

The voice of Lady Tiger and Tiger basketball, Matt Payton will be on the road with Campbellsville to bring the play-by-play action from courtside at SSU's Waller Gymnasium. Fan can listen locally on WLCU-FM 88.7 The Tiger or online at www.campbellsvilletigers.com/watch.

Since the Lady Tigers' loss on Jan. 11, they are on a five-game winning streak, most recently sporting an 81-49 victory against Cumberland University last Saturday on the road.

CU was powered by the 16 and 15 points respectively from Savannah Gregory and Madison Faulkner as they also got an 11-point effort from Sammy Rogers off the bench. Campbellsville's defense limited the Phoenix to 15 made shots from the field, a season low for a Lady Tiger opponent while forcing 27 turnovers.

SERIES FACTS
  • The series history between the Lady Tigers and Bears has be almost as close as it gets with Shawnee State holding a slim three-game advantage at 18-15 all-time.
  • CU broke a six-game winning streak for Shawnee State from 2016-2018 by sweeping the season series last season, winning the two regular season matchups then the MSC Tournament Championship game on Mar. 4, 2019.
  • Last year's championship game in Pikeville came by a final score of 64-50 as the Lady Tigers were led by Jordan Doram's 21 points along with a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double from Madison Faulkner.
  • Over the previous six seasons, the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship has come from either Campbellsville or Shawnee State with the Bears winning four-straight from 2015-2018 sandwiched inside of the 2019 and 2014 tournament titles for the Lady Tigers.
  • During that stretch of championship success for both programs, the two teams faced off in the tournament five of the six seasons with four matchups coming in the championship game.

LAST MEETING - JAN. 11
  • CU trailed the entirety of the first meeting as the Bears jumped out to a 9-2 lead within the three minutes of the game as the closest the Lady Tigers came to regaining the lead was a one-point game three times, twice in the third quarter at 49-48 and 52-51 then again in the fourth at 57-56.
  • The third quarter was the quarter for the Lady Tigers on the comeback trail as they outscored the Bears 23-13 in the period but were never able to break through to even tie the game as Shawnee State kept padding their lead the closer CU got.
  • Campbellsville got double figure outputs from Caitlin Hall (17), Madison Faulkner (17), and Courtney Pritchett (16) but the rest of the Lady Tigers struggled from the field as the rest of the team combined to shoot 21.7 percent from the field.

SCOUTING SHAWNEE STATE
  • The Bears have not budged in the rankings since the last meeting as they are still at the No. 7 spot after also suffering a defeat to University of Pikeville on the road after their win against the Lady Tigers.
  • Shawnee State also sits in a tie for second place in the Mid-South Conference standings, as they are tied with Lindsey Wilson College at an 8-2 MSC record.
  • Guard Bailey Cummins has been one of the best players in the Mid-South Conference through non-conference into the new year as she ranks second in the MSC in scoring average (17.8) and leads the conference in assists per game (5.8).

TIGER CLAWZ
  • CU head coach Ginger High Colvin achieved the 20-win total for the 12th-straight time in her 13 seasons leading the charge for the Lady Tigers. The only season she did not lead Campbellsville to a 20-win season was in her first season as head coach when the Lady Tigers won 19 games.
  • Campbellsville is the No. 1 assisting team in NAIA Division I with a team total of 464 so far behind starting Hall's 132 assists, good for No. 5 individually in that category.
  • Forcing turnovers has been a big part of the CU game plan this season as they force their opponents into 27.3 turnovers per game and rank first in NAIA DI in total steals at 386, steals per game at 16.1, and turnover margin at +11.5 this season.
  • The three-point shot has been a big benefit for the Lady Tiger offense as they rank No. 2 in the NAIA in team three-point percentage at 38.5 percent behind one of the best three-point shooters in NAIA DI as Lexy Lake ranks No. 3 in total threes made (76) as well as No. 4 in threes made per game (3.2), and in three-point percentage (44.4%).

  • Gregory and Lee hold a little more of a connection than just being in the top-five on the career steals list as Gregory become the first Lady Tiger since Lee to reach the 1,000-point milestone during their junior campaigns. Lee eventually finished with 1,462 career-points, which is 16th all-time.

  • The monumental win came in the Lady Tigers 91-59 win over Martin Methodist in Pulaski, Tenn. on Nov. 9 as part of the MSC/SSAC Crossover.
  • Campbellsville joins Wayland Baptist and Union University (Tenn.) as the only other programs to reach the feat as Union is no longer part of the NAIA after moving to the NCAA Division II level.
