CU Athletics suspends play until April 1; University moves to virtual technology instead of face-to-face classes

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — In light of the growing national concern of the spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19, Campbellsville University and the Mid-South Conference have announced all athletic events have been suspended until April 1.

The only athletic events that will be played during this time are three men's volleyball matches. Campbellsville will host Cumberland University tonight, Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. ET. In addition, both Campbellsville and Cumberland University will play Webber International on Friday with times yet to be determined. These events are being played as both opponents were already in Campbellsville before decisions were ultimately made.

The remaining athletic events from March 12 through March 31 and have been canceled per the Mid-South Conference Administrative Committee and Campbellsville University officials. As of Thursday evening, play will resume on April 1 but could possibly change to a later date if deemed necessary.

"In an effort to make the most well-informed decisions regarding the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff due to the developments surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mid-South Conference has decided to suspend all competition at least through the end of March," said MSC Commissioner Eric Ward. "The situation is evolving at a dizzying pace and decisions are currently being made based on incomplete and/or rapidly changing information.

"Conference leadership will be convening by conference call twice each week during this time period to evaluate the most recently available information and developments within the sports industry, as well as up-to-the-minute information from the NAIA and our campuses to determine the best path forward for our conference."

Dr. Michael V. Carter, President of Campbellsville University, released a full statement to students, faculty and staff at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.

The statement included Campbellsville University is moving to virtual technology instead of face-to-face classes beginning March 16 through March 27. Each faculty member will communicate with their respective students on how courses will be delivered.

Also, residential students are being allowed to remain in the residence halls if they choose and the university cafeteria will remain open for normal hours.

The full statement released by President Carter is below.

Dear Campbellsville University students, faculty, staff and coaches,

"Campbellsville University leadership team has been carefully monitoring the COVID-19 virus.

Our primary concern is for the health and welfare of students and our greater university community. In order to keep people safe and continue our educational mission, we have prudently weighed options for face-to-face classes.

While Kentucky is a low risk state and there is no known case of COVID-19 on our campus or regional centers, we believe steps are in order. Beginning March 16 through March 27 we are implementing a plan whereby students can continue their courses of study and allow residential students to stay in the residence hall if they so choose.

  • Degree program face-to-face classes will be delivered by virtual technology.
  • Technology Training Center Certificate classes, such as cosmetology, barbering, allied health, etc. will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Faculty will communicate with their respective students as to how courses will be delivered.
  • Students are responsible for completing coursework via the determined avenues of instruction.
  • Degree-seeking students have the option to continue their studies from home or in the residence halls.
  • Resident hall students who choose to return home may leave their belongings in their rooms.
  • All International students who choose to leave campus during this time must report to the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) before leaving campus.
  • Any student traveling beyond the university environment are encouraged to follow the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control www.cdc.gov
  • Residence hall students have the choice to stay in the resident hall.
  • Resident Directors will have room cleaning and disinfectant supplies available for students.
  • The university food service will continue.
  • On-campus residents are encouraged to keep adequate social distances to mitigate threat of viral diseases.
  • Special wellness stations will be set up.
  • Students who do not have access to technology off campus may use campus or center facilities, where computer technology will be available in a number of locations. Sanitizer will be available to wipe down computers between users.
  • All university-sponsored international travel is suspended until further notice. University-sponsored domestic travel is being evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • All campus sites are prepared to cancel or adjust any university events.
  • Our university cleaning staff, augmented by others, is working diligently for a safe environment. Disinfecting all high touch areas and equipment is a priority.
  • University offices, including academic support, will remain open. Use of technology for communication is recommended.

Again, based on information from local, state and national health officials, it is anticipated the university will return to normal academic operations on March 30, 2020 or whenever it is deemed safe to resume in-person instruction.

We are taking this virus threat seriously. Continuing our Christian higher education mission is important, but YOUR safety is our first concern.

As we monitor COVID-19 developments, we will update you by our website, emails and CU Alerts. Bless you and yours as we prayerfully seek to keep one another safe."
