CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers hosted an absolute thriller with No. 10 Aquinas College visiting the Gosser Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon as they were able to win in five sets.
Campbellsville (20-2), ranked second in the latest NAIA poll welcomed No. 10 Aquinas College to Gosser for their first top 10 match since the beginning of the season.
From the start, both the Tigers and the Saints knew this would be an absolute battle as the teams fought back and forth for much of the first set.
This seemed to set the tone for the remainder of the match as it took Campbellsville 29 points to earn the set one victory.
After dropping the first set however, the Saints came out in the second and absolutely stuffed the Tiger offense as CU only recorded six kills on 29 attacks and hit for -0.276 in the frame. The Saints were able to record nine blocks in the second to win their first set of the evening, 25-12.
Nonetheless, the Tigers roared back 25-22 in the third behind a five-kill set from
Yannik Ahr, who led the Tigers on the day.
Campbellsville again came out flat for the fourth set with a negative hitting percentage again, dropping it 25-14.
As the Saints forced the fifth set, the two squads squabbled back and forth with 12 ties and five lead changes through the final fifteen points, but after trailing 12-11, the Tigers scored four straight points, sealed by a block from
Ryan Smith to earn the 15-12 set win.
Yannik Ahr was able to finish the day for Campbellsville with 16 kills, setting a career high and a new single season best for the team.
Rafael Cruz was also able to notch a double-digit number in the kill column as he used both power and finesse to work his way to ten kills on the evening.
Defensively, it was the duo of
Ramon Matos and
Ryan Smith who each took part in eight block assists on the day.
John Montalvo also greatly aided the Tiger backline with 20 digs, while Ahr recorded 12 of his own.
The Tigers will now return to Mid-South Conference play as they will visit Thomas More on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. ET match before returning home to makeup the postponed Cumberland University match on Thursday.
