Hot shooting helps Thomas More upset No. 2 Campbellsville in MSC Semifinal

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.  —  Top-seeded Campbellsville couldn't overcome first half shooting struggles as it fell to the Thomas More Saints, 69-58, in the Mid-South Conference semifinal.

The first half was a struggle for the Lady Tigers only hitting 9-of-35 from the floor to shoot 26 percent from the field. Five Edward Jones triples were knocked down though to keep them in the game.

The Saints took a 21-13 lead forcing CU to take its first timeout of the second quarter. CU worked the lead to four, 22-18, then Thomas More jumped back out to an eight-point advantage, 29-21, after a Kaela Saner jumper for two of her 20 points.

Campbellsville was solid in the final minute and cut the lead to four, 31-27, at halftime.

The second half saw both teams scoring five points apiece, then the Lady Tigers went on a 9-0 run capped by a Madison Faulkner jumper giving CU a five-point lead, 41-36. Faulkner ended the day leading the Lady Tigers with 13 points.

Thomas More would then go on a run itself. With CU leading 41-36, Thomas More outscored CU 9-4 to end the third quarter and it was all square, 45-all.

The fourth quarter started with a Faulkner layup then Savannah Gregory hit a pair of free throws to put CU ahead, 49-45. The Saints rallied with four straight points then took a 51-49 lead after Sander hit a 3-pointer. Campbellsville was able to tie it at 51 but Emily Schultz put the Saints up for good, 53-51, at the 4:36 mark.

Thomas More closed the game on a 16-7 run with majority coming at the free throw line. The Saints hit all eight free throws in the final 1:15 to ice the game.

The Lady Tigers shot the ball better in the second half hitting 11-of- 31 (36%). The better shooting wasn't enough as the Saints hit as many field goals as Campbellsville but knocked down four more threes. Thomas More hit 11-of-20 from deep overall.

Saner hit four triples for the Saints in the second half to lead all scorers with 20 points.

Madison Faulkner poured in 13 points, all in the second half, aiding the Lady Tigers comeback effort, while also grabbing a team-high 15 rebounds. Savannah Gregory was the only other Lady Tiger to reach double-figures as she pitched in 11 points.

Campbellsville will look to bounce back in the NAIA national tournament in Billings, Montana. The Lady Tigers will await to see their opponent when the NAIA announces the qualifiers and bracket on Wednesday, March 11th
