OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – Needing to wait until February 2021 to begin Mid-South Conference play didn't stop the Campbellsville University men's soccer team from getting into the win column in September with their season opening win at Oakland City University by a final of 4-0.
 
The Tigers begin their slate of four non-conference games to be played during September and October this Sunday evening as they travel north to take on the Mighty Oaks. Newcomers and returners alike played their part both offensively and defensively in CU's dominant victory.
 
Sophomore striker Gianluca Contegno got the scoring started with his first career goal for the Tigers as he was assisted by Gustav Oskarsson. Oskarsson had good field awareness early on as he also assisted on the second goal scored by freshman Sergio Tarrida in Tarrida's CU debut.
 
The only unassisted goal of the game came from senior captain Tom Edge as Edge scored a beauty of a goal to put Campbellsville up 3-0. The final tally of the game was scored by another senior as Scott Brooksbank finished off the scoring off of an assist from Matys Savigny.
 
With All-MSC keeper Owen Stott not returning to CU for the 2020 season, the Tigers came into the year with somewhat of a question at the goalie position. Freshmen Jeremi Campagnolo and Edoardo Forastieri battled in the preseason for the spot as Campagnolo earned the start in the opener and going on to make three saves in 75 minutes. Forastieri finished off the final 15 minutes of the game making a save to preserve the shutout for CU.
 
Campbellsville men's soccer will play their home opener this Saturday at Finley Stadium at 7 p.m. ET as they play host to Brescia University. That game was originally scheduled to be played in Owensboro, Ky. but was moved to Campbellsville due to field conditions at Brescia.
