Tigers can’t overcome rough start in 89-72 loss to Pikeville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University Men's basketball sought out to turn the tide around, but it was not to be, as the Tigers fell 89-72 at the hands of University of Pikeville to move to 6-11 on the season.

The Bears came out the gates shooting three consecutive 3-pointers, setting early precedence for what would be a tough game of catch-up for the Tigers. UPike ended up starting the first 6:40 of the game jumping out to a 21-2 lead that forced CU head coach Brent Vernon to use two of his timeouts during that stretch.

CU was able to salvage a short stint, heading into the 11:50 mark reducing the deficit to 13 points, but a notable first-half Korbin Spencer performance steered the Bears to a lead of 50-30 at half-time. Spencer scored all 13 of his total points in the game in 16 minutes played in the first half for the sophomore.

The Tigers had their work cut out for them going into the second half but a field goal percentage of 44% made it difficult for the Tigers to apply real pressure on Pikeville, as the Bears capitalized and ran away with the game shooting 15-31 from the 3-point line.

Jay'von Jackson was the leading scorer in the game, with the junior from Plainfield, N.J. recorded a career-high of 22 points while also leading the team in rebounds with 5. The only other Campbellsville player in double figures was Brayden Sebastian as the freshman finished with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field while going 4-for-6 from three-point range.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Jackson's efforts would not suffice as Pikeville extended their lead to a 33-point margin with 6:48 on the clock. The Bears were able to maintain their 17-point victory despite being outscored in the second half.

Pikeville's Darius Love displayed a top performance coming up with 15 points that were vital in a performance that helped the Bears see out a comfortable victory. Along with Spencer's 13 points, UPike got double figures from Jamir Simpson (13), Christian Sweazie (11), and Jacob Brown (10) with all of their scorers adding six or more in the game.

The Tigers will stay in Campbellsville for their next matchup when they welcome University of the Cumberlands to the Powell Athletic Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. ET tip.
