Lady Tiger volleyball opens shifted 2020-21 schedule with Vette City Classic

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – With the 2020 fall schedule mainly moved to the spring, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team will get back to action this Friday and Saturday in Bowling Green, Ky. after very limited fall participation.

The Lady Tigers will compete in the Vette City Classic hosted by the Mid-South Conference along with four other Mid-South Conference teams and Missouri Baptist University. Those MSC teams include University of the Cumberlands, Cumberland University, Shawnee State University, and Georgetown College with all matches between MSC teams serving as non-conference competition.

CU will compete in two matches each on Friday and Saturday with their first match of the even coming against Missouri Baptist at 12:30 p.m. ET on Friday followed by a 4 p.m. ET match against Cumberlands. Their Saturday slate includes a 12:30 p.m. ET match against Shawnee State then a 5 p.m. ET match against Cumberland.

Teams will be competing in the Ephram White Gym in Bowling Green with local time being in the central time zone as no outside spectators will be allowed in but each team has been permitted a select amount of tickets available to family members as that information has been shared directly with the teams via the Mid-South Conference.

LADY TIGER NOTES
  • Campbellsville played three official matches in November as part of the NCCAA Championship tournament as they went 1-2 in those matches.
  • They earned a 3-1 win against Mid-America Christian University and suffered a pair of 3-0 defeats to Bethel (Ind.) and Grace College.
  • Six different players came away with double digit kills for the Lady Tigers off of those three matches as Sophie Ball (23), Sutton Mason (21), and Stela Velinova (21) were top targets of setter Paige Merrick as Merrick herself collected 16 kills with Taylor Weirich (13) and Sonia Flendrich (12) rounding out that group.
  • On the back row, the graduation of All-MSC libero Jaimie Thompson left a big gap in the CU defense but sophomore Katie Morin looks to step in for the Lady Tigers at libero with incoming freshman Ana Martin Barahona joining the team to start the spring 2021 semester to add depth to the defensive position.

SCOUTING MISSOURI BAPTIST
  • The Spartans competed in 11 official competitions in the fall, going 10-1 overall and 6-0 inside of the American Midwest Conference while only dropping four total sets.
  • These matches at the Vette City Classic will be their first matches of the spring semester after warming up with a scrimmage on Jan. 20.
  • Coming off of their fall 2020, Isidora Stojovic leads the team in kills with 86 through the 11 matches for MBU with Emma Lattimore (64), Giovanna Tapigliani (63), and Raylyn Dodd (59) not far behind.
  • They have a pair of setters with triple digits in assists with Shannon McLain leading at 217 in eight matches played and Manuela Vargas playing on just four matches for 138 assists.

SCOUTING CUMBERLANDS
  • The Patriots were very limited in the fall similar to Campbellsville as they went 1-1 in a pair of official matches with a 3-1 loss to Southeastern University and a 3-1 win over Middle Georgia State University back in October.
  • UC and CU played in a pair of electric matches in the 2019 season as on both occasions the road team went up two sets to none just for the home team to come back and win the next three sets to win each match.
  • This season, the Patriots are led on the attack by the trio of Lily Chapman (30), Abbie Genders (27), and Shelby Lackey (25) as no other player has more than eight kills in those two matches played.
  • Both Savannah Schwarz and Lexi Lester spent time at setter with Schwarz holding the statistical lead in assists at 51 in a single match played as Lester played in both to finish the fall with 40 assists.

SCOUTING SHAWNEE STATE
  • The Bears have not played in any official competition stemming from the switch from the fall season to a spring 2021 season.
  • Last season, SSU took both matches against the Lady Tigers with a 3-1 win in Porstmouth, Ohio and a 3-2 win at Gosser Gymnasium.
  • Shawnee State will begin the season with a first-year head coach, similar to CU, as Devan Scarberry takes over the leading role on the bench for the Bears after working as an assistant for five seasons.

SCOUTING CUMBERLAND
  • The Phoenix have played in and lost three matches earlier in January prior to the Vette City Classic as they dropped all of their matches by a score of 3-2 to Trinity International, Judson, and William Penn.
  • These two teams split their regular season matchups last season as the Phoenix earned a 3-0 win in Lebanon, Tenn. and the Lady Tigers pulled out a five-set win 3-2 at Gosser.
  • Lauren Galvan (30), and Isabella Curcio (29) are the top attackers for Cumberland with Luciana Arena (21), Samantha Holguin (21), Olivia Dodd (17), Maddie Perez (11), and Victoria Johnson (10) also accumulating double digit kills through three matches.
  • Johnson is the primary setter for the Phoenix as she reached 126 assists in the three losses and is also fourth on the team with 21 digs.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Lady Tigers will play four-straight road matches following the Vette City Classic beginning with a Feb. 6 non-conference match at Asbury University.
