PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – An explosive offensive first half from both sides only maintained for one team through 40 minutes as the Campbellsville University men's basketball team fell to Shawnee State 106-86 Saturday afternoon on the road.
Both teams scored over 50 points in the first half as the Bears went into the break only up two points at a 54-52 advantage. The high scoring was due, in part, to a three-point shooting clinic from both sides as both teams shot 15 in the half and combined to only miss 11 of the 30 attempts from deep.
Shawnee State's Miles Thomas went 5-for-6 from deep with four other Bears hitting at least one in the half. CU's
Sam Weining went a perfect 4-for-4 from deep in the half with
Max Reyes going 4-for-5 from the outside on his way to 18 points.
Both Reyes and
Taiveyhon Mason played all 20 minutes of the first half and that wear and tear may have shown early in the second half as they allowed Shawnee State to jump out ahead 60-52 to start the half after three-straight turnovers, one from Mason and two from Reyes.
The Tigers were able to keep it within about 10 points until about 14 minutes remaining in the game when the Bears ended up scoring nine-straight points that extended to a 14-3 run for SSU as they pulled ahead 82-62 and never looked back.
Reyes finished with a game-high 27 points, just one point shy of the career-high he set two nights ago at Thomas More with Mason finishing with 18, Weining finishing with 13, and
Jay'von Jackson contributing 13 points off the bench.
Shawnee State had six players in double figures led by the 17 from Thomas off the bench as he didn't score a single point in the second half, as Issac Abergut (15), James Jones (14), Latavious Mitchell (14), Amier Gilmore (13), and EJ Onu (12) all contributed to the balanced scoring game.
Campbellsville will continue in their busy schedule as they will return home to the Powell Athletic Center to host Freed-Hardeman University for a 4:30 p.m. ET scheduled tip.
